Do you ever feel anxious?

When I was about eight I cried myself to sleep when the realisation hit me that I would never marry Alan Osmond.  Is there anything that gives you that anxious feeling?  Do you ever feel anxious that there is a fabric out there that you will never have any of or never have enough of?

There is only one line out there that makes me feel like that - that I wish would come back and let me buy it all over again only this time I would buy enough.  Authentic by Sweetwater.  It was my first ever quilting purchase, on 22 February 2010, used for my first ever quilting project and it still irks me that I didn't buy more.  I didn't know it would go and never come back.  There are so many perfect prints in that line that it doesn't make any sense that it's gone forever.

AND THEN ... just a few days ago a quiet little post appeared on Sweetwater's blog mentioning their new line, "Mama Said Sew" and, after a few photos of this and that, they whispered,"we wanted to do something similar to one of our most popular lines of fabric, Authentic." I swear I nearly fell off my chair.  Instead of the chartreuse of Authentic, Mama Said Sew's accent colour will be red.  In a favourite colour toss-up between chartreuse and red, I would have to teeter on the edge of the coin. Oh, and they're adding in grey.  Which only makes me feel more anxious.

My toes are already curling with that irrational feeling that it might all sell out before I get enough.  Ludicrous I know.  I'm even lying awake at night trying to work out just how much I can afford - how many charm packs, jelly rolls, layer cakes, fat eighth packs, fat quarter bundles and yardage.  I've even allowed the word bolt to run through my head, which has never happened before.

I sometimes watch that program, Hoarders, and feel quite smug that I'm not like that, I don't hoard anything until it becomes a problem just for the sake of having enough of it.  Well I hope that's not about to change.

  1. Eeeeep, all that fabric is gorgeous. On the things I may never have. Currently its Emma Bridgewater hens mugs. I love them but just cant justify the spends. There may be tears before long, I tell you.

  2. Sometimes when I'm thigh high in fabric I wonder if I'm a hoarder?

Lovely fabrics, they look like great blenders, I've just started to hand quilt my sweetwater quilt, I'm at the unsure stage!

  3. Absolutely adorable fabric. I'm turning into a sucker for prints with words... this won't help.

I think sewing/quilting has turned me into a compulsive shopper. "Oh, another swap I can join, well, it's okay to buy $40 more than I need to if that's what it takes to get free shipping..." "Oh, Intrepid Thread is having a sale? Let's just pop on over..." Good thing I got a raise and that hubby doesn't see how much I spend, huh?? :)

  4. Sweetwater is definitely a rising star on my gotta have list.

  5. Oh yes, I agree. I’m so excited about the Mama Said Sew series. You can guess why I love their fabrics!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Authentic was a turning point line for me and this is a great line, the grey and black really echos is. I watch those hoarding things just to warm myself that I am a hairs breadth from being like that

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh hoard away; they'll find your body eventually, clinging to your stash with a grin on your face!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm just relieved it was Alan and not Donny. Everyone seemed to love Donny.
And you know you are singing to the Choir when you talk about fabric hoarding. Guilty as charged.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Authentic in grey.... oh that could be dangerous... I am starting to worry about my fabric addiction, I seriously cannot stop. And I'm not sewing fast enough!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh by golly, you know if you're thinking bolt then you should certainly buy a bolt. It's clearly your all time most favorite and the justification of how much you've wished you've purchased more after all this time is clearly enough.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I feel exactly the same way about both Authentic and Mama Said Sew!

I didn't really understand how fabric lines work when authentic came out. There's definitely at least a fat quarter pack (or two?) of MSS in my future :)

  12. I`m having anxieties about Parisville. I bought it last August after you mentioned on this blog that it was on sale at The FQ Shop and I love it so much. I made a quilt from it using my old machine which had terrible tension problems. There are holes in the seams but I just love it - it has a wonderful vintage feel to it and it`s quirky and different. I can find bits and pieces to buy but I `need` the whole line. So my advice? Buy bolts if you love it that much.

  13. Why must they go away forever? I have a few jelly rolls that I am afraid to cut into, for fear that once I do, I'll never be able to find that fabric again. I am looking forward to this new line coming out, too! Red is my favorite color.. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I never go for grey - b- u- t - those grey prints are delish - I'd put them with mustard maybe instead of red ?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I hoard a few of the Debbie Mumm "Mumms The Word" prints. I've used little bits of a couple of them but I bought them because I loved looking at them and I hate the thought of using them! I have a quilt that I will make with them for myself when I get around to it.

If I see something I really love I always buy 5 yards. I still have fabrics from the late 80s that I bought 5 yards of just so I would have "enough" LOL!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I felt *exactly* the same way when I saw their blog post about Mama Said Sew. Must buy it all. ALL.

Sweetwater is amazing, I love everything they've done.

    ReplyDelete
  17. love those prints. speaking of feeling anxious - I'm feeling that about flea market fancy right now - I had a preorder that is now backordered :( I also feel anxious about Wee Play - a line by Moda I totally adore and it's getting harder and harder to come by. I've had 8 charm packs, and a FQB and a jelly roll - and I don't think it's enough, LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1) don't tell anyone else about it until you have bought it all.
    2) I must have been lying next to you when I was 9 crying because I would never marry Donny Osmond.
    3) As Buzz would say 'You (we) are a sad, strange little man.

  19. I wasn't feeling anxious but now I am!! I will NEED to have some of this fabric too. Not once have I ever wanted every fabric from a line but I can totally see myself hoarding, I mean buying, these!! It.is.awesome. :)

  21. The fabric is wonderful. I can't speak to the notion of being cautious with your fabric purchase because I'm the woman who drove all over town yesterday to buy up all of a specific coffee mugs that our local coffee purveyor has because it's my favorite and they are on clearance which means that when they are gone, they will never come back. Yes, I know that was a very long sentence and I'm huffing it out as I type so you know that I'm serious. :-) Let the buying begin. Even mentally.

  22. ooooh just noticed you have changed your header. It's great!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey new header again. We may have to stage a Touchdraw intervention. Are you still communicating with your family, or permanently engrossed in Touchdraw?

This line is wonderful. I could never make the commitment to buy a bolt of fabric, though. A whole bolt?! Crazy talk.

I think it is so interesting that there are 3 new fabric lines, all from different designers/manufacturers coming out that all have the doily-type motif on them. How does this happen that people working in isolation all come up with the same motif in the same design season? Brrr!, Mama Said Sew and there's another one I've seen but can't recall at the mo.

  24. Oh, oh, oh these are delicious, really delicious - I'd be in the same situation as you
The trouble is I've just received 2 delicious yards of lovely velvety soft batiks that I'll need some solids to compliment for a birthday quilt

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yup, I saw that post the day they posted it. Makes me want to start a fabric shop to buy the bolts. I am totally smitten with this line. Maybe we can be a friends at the ultimate 12 step program...

  27. Oh I completely agree with you. I usually only buy a meter at a time of a fabric and it never use to occur to me that fabric ranges would stop being printed and quite a few times I've been left short and wanting more. I would be terrible if I had money you wouldn't be able to move in my house for fabric and even now without 'money' I have fabric that no doubt I'll never use it's just nice to have it!! Must be a cure for fabric addiction somewhere!

    ReplyDelete
  28. This is the fabric line I am most excited about too! I loved Authentic (am using the last of it for your Siblings Together project).

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fabric anxiety is my middle name lately; it is so rare that any fabric ever comes back. I had bought a "birchtrees" landscape fabric yrs ago and made a remembrance quilt when my Dad passed--now I so wish I had bought 3 or 4 yds....I totally "get it". Great that you can find this again....Julierose

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think Sweetwater is currently my favorite overall set of designers. I just love how they market their products as well. Cut and rolled up on fabulous wooden spools?!! Uhm, yes please!! Where can I get those?!

Oh and you are talking to the queen of anxiety. Welcome to my world. I'll help you navigate. Cocktail in hand.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Lol, I'm not too bad about fabric that way, although I wish I'd been around the quilt scene when the Heather Ross goldfish were floating about!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I had to smile at this post. This describes me to a "T". I will buy 2 yards of fabric that I only need 1/8 yd. of just because I might want more. I also am guilty of not using that fabric I love because I might "need it for a different project". I know, that doesn't make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, we are in the same boat...with only enough money to buy one oar...er..one fq bundle of this, the newest Sweetwater Obsession...why do they do this to us?? I too love the gray and the then to add the red...that was sheer genius...I NEED THIS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well now you've done it! Everyone and his dog will be buying it! They're bound to run out now!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Buy, buy, buy... it will make you feel good even if you never do anything but look at it, stroke it and refold it from time to time! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. There is no therapy for what you have, totally incurable. I reckon my 1st "modern" purchase was a charm pack of Authentic, I got it fairly locally, and have just checked their website, they still have it, on SALE!! http://www.kalquilts.com/more/on/details/5410CP

    ReplyDelete
  37. I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. This is the one line that I am already completely anxious about! I'm contemplating the same things--how much can I realistically get. "Bolt" had not crossed my mind. Yet...

    ReplyDelete
  38. I know how you feel. Makower had a collection (called Elizabethan) out years ago and I did get enough to make a quilt like my Autumn Waterfall, but have regretted never getting any more before it disappeared :(
I will be blaming if I purchase some of those grey prints.

    ReplyDelete
  39. OMG I can't believe that you have been quilting for such a short time, you make so many lovely pieces of work.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Authentic was gone long before I started quilting... but that new range looks so fabulous! I've been on an attempted fabric diet for the last few weeks. It's failed. I am a certified fabric addict and hoarder and proud of it :o)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I saw that post (and giveaway) and fell in love...Authentic was also before my time but I love this.

Also - my inexplicable panic as a child was about having to learn multiplication. I cried at night worrying about it. I was a strange child.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I am SO GLAD that someone else gets this! This is one of those lines with so many perfect basics, I feel the hoarding inclination kicking in well in advance!

My panic as a child...are you ready? As a mere eight-year-old, I used to work myself up into a lather that I wouldn't be able to get a job and live on my own as an adult. What a thing for an eight-year-old to fret about!! Oy!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hahahahahaha!

First of all, I like the header.

Second of all, you should leave some for the rest of us! Something tells me you are going to give in and buy every scrap available!

    ReplyDelete
  44. When it's fabric, we don't call it hoarding, we call it stashing. Totally different, right? To be honest, I feel anxious enough sometimes, but quilting (and fabric) keeps me sane. I just zone out and I'm off in another world - one that makes sense. At least to me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Once the words "I'll take the whole bolt" leave your mouth, there's no turning back. Trust me...this the voice of experience speaking.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think its only hoarding if there's years worth of dead cats burried in between layers of stash. You should be fine. But I'm gonna come round and check on your kitties just in case...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh no, that's how I feel about Sweetwater's Pure! You mean there's another that might break my heart? Thanks for the head's up-- this new line looks just scrumptious!

    ReplyDelete
  48. beautiful fabric. I understand your anxiety, although I guess people who don't share a passion for crafts/quilting wouldn't. For me, the fabric is a huge part of the creative process and often a project is inspired by the beauty of a print.

I'm also hoarding fabric, but I have found that having a reasonably big stash enhances my projects and working from my stash gets my creative juices flowing and hopefully every so often makes for more "me" looking projects. So as long as buying fabric is not hurting your finances or your relationships or stopping you from inviting people over, why not hoard a bit?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh these are fabulous fabrics!! But I'm no hoarder, I'm the child of one and have to buy for each project just in case.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm a hoarder. I love my batiks and daren't use my favourites because I know I'll never find them again.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Maybe you should talk Mandy into stocking it, that way you can unpack (and stroke!) the bolts when they arrive and then go and visit them each evening to check they're still there...well, until they sell like hot cakes and they disappear from your life ;o) Would LSWH buy you a bolt as an advanced birthday present? And maybe a second as an advanced Christmas present?!! It's gorgeous fabric, you HAVE to get some!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I cried in my thirties because I knew I would never marry John Denver.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Great post! I felt the same way about this line. could it be more lovely? I plan on getting it all , and yes a bolt of one of the greys would be nice. Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  54. I know how you feel! I was on to Authentic at the tail end so I just managed to get myself a jelly roll and a couple of half yards, but I have been a Sweetwater fan ever since. I can't wait for Mama Said Sew to hit the shops - I know I will be stalking my favourite online shops looking for it, and experience has taught me to go for yardage right away, because they go so fast!
PS, for me it wasn't Alan or Donny, but Jay ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I get anxious about things like if my paycheck will cover all of my expenses or if my dogs will get sick, but never about fabric. Sure, I have felt disappointed to miss out on a print, but have realized in the short period of time that I have been sewing, that there will always be something similar that comes along. Just like with fashion. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. So funny to read that post. Authentic is my all time fave line and I still have some I have not cut into and touch it from time to time:) I want that special project that will last and last (for me) to make with it. I must say I have not bought any fabric since I heard this line is coming out and I'm so excited. You'd think it was a grandchild or something! Oh yeah, we love our fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sunkissed by Sweetwater was the first line of fabric I became obsessed about. Then Reunion. Something about Sweetwater....and now, Mama said Sew and Lucy's Crabshack are calling out to me! My poor bank account....

    ReplyDelete
  58. RED!! J'adore! I get anxious about mundane things--will the bus be late so that I miss the train to work. And then, all the fabrics I'd adore to have are around when my 'treats fund' is empty, and when the treats fund is booming, there's no fabric I want. C'est la vie.

Hazle (blog-hopping. Found you via Archie the wonder dog and her hexies, and then your Flickr feed, and here I am. :-) )

  59. I am your partner in pain! I too am making my very first quilt using the authentic fabric. I haven't finished it yet....and I only have a few scraps left. Sad, doesn't even come close to how I feel. Distraught is more like it. If you know of anyone that has this in their fabric stash, unused....please please tell them about my almost finished quilt :-( I love love love this fabric. I neeeeed it.
    Ps. Love your blog x
