Made with Oakshott - double chance

This month Michael from Oakshott fabrics is giving two chances to play with his beautiful fabrics.  This month, we are offering both the Moonlight (below) and the Rubies (further down) bundles.

Each month, Michael Oakshott and I choose an Oakshott bundle and challenge you to come up with some kind of wonderful idea of what you would make with it.  This month we're offering an F8 pack of each of these beautiful ranges.

To be in with a chance of playing with these beautiful fabrics, here's what you need to do:
  • Leave a comment letting me know what you would make with these fabrics and which bundle you choose or whether you're happy with either.
  • Be specific about your idea.  We won't pick someone who  says "I want to make a quilt" but might pick someone who says "I have in mind a quilt with ohio star blocks and I would mix the Oakshotts with low volume text prints".
  • After a few days, we will pick our favourite project suggestions and two people will be sent a bundle.
  • All we ask of you is that you write a guest post for this blog containing photos of the finished item and a tutorial showing us how you made it within one month of receipt of the Oakshotts.
And if you don't get picked this month, don't worry, there will be another great bundle on offer soon so stay tuned.

  1. Love the moonlight! I have an idea for a star pillow cover for my brother in law.

  2. I love moonlight, it would be gorgeous as a Great granny square throw with some low volume prints, WOW! Thanks for the chance to win.

  3. The Moonlight is a beautiful assortment but, alas, I saw the orange, so the Rubies would be my pick.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I have in mind a handsome modern quilt in which I would sash a bright print with a gray and a tan. I would set thes on a background of dark gray.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Rubies! I love those colors! I would make a beautiful patchwork summer tote bag with lots of pockets! Then I would carry it everywhere I go (mostly to quilt shops!)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Today is the first day of spring and Rubies reminds me of tulips in a sunrise! I see a wall hanging!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I love both but Rubies really speaks to me. I think a summery fun fresh picnic quilt would be perfect especially using a nice simple block pattern to highlight those gorgeous colors would be ideal. I think I would add a nice silvery grey or a warm yellow as a back ground color to really pop those pinks. Oh the ideas I have!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Love them both but...Moonlight! I want to make a babyquilt for a classy little boy and think I'd probably go with a simple triangle pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Rubies---wonderful colors!
I would make a modern stretched star for my nephew' wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  10. This time it is quite difficult to decide! Moolight I would transfer in a weekender bag. Ruby I would love to use to make a bed-hanging for my girl. She has a high bed and no bedside table to put the books. I hanger with pockets to be fixed on the wood along the side.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I would make a quilt from the moonlight series. The quilt I have would be toile-like rabbits dancing in the moonlight with the oakshoot squares as different shades of twilight. This bundle would be perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  12. much as I love the oranges in the Ruby stack (pink is not my thing unfortunately) so it would be the Moonlight stack and probably a 'wings' style applique lap quilt with some hand dyed fabric

    ReplyDelete
  13. I love the rubies! I would like to make a folk art style (my own design) applique quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I could use either bundle. I am working on abstracting pictures I took of a cranberry bush in our yard and the reds would be great for that. I have pictures of all the seasons. Also, I am working on a contemporary version of "winter" themed quilts....being from minnesota I "feel" these colors.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I see a bag with these beautiful solids. I would do a simple square patchwork cargo duffle from Noodlehead but I would have to look at the pattern better before committing. Definitely a bag I see a big tote bag and definitely square patchwork.

    ReplyDelete
  16. i have had buntings and garlands on my mind lately...i am working on one made from hexies of liberty of london fabrics. but i have a bunch of cool/vintage handkerchiefs and have been wanting to make a bunting from them and i think the rubies bundle would really pop in relation to the 'neutral' of the handkerchiefs. it would be a very springy bunting! (which is a good thing, since it is the first day of spring and it snowed here!)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I love love the rubies, I'm relatively new to sewing but would love to make a mini swoon quilt (with white being the background) or maybe a lovely bold sew together bag would be amazing!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I really like the rubies! I would use them as flying geese in a quilts with prints that are closely related to them.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Both sets are lovely, I would make a chevron table runner, with the graduating colours and black borders it would look lovely, the colours would really pop

    ReplyDelete
  20. It wouldn't matter to me which set... they are both spectacular! I have in mind a modern mini quilt. Simple to highlight the fabrics themselves. A simple four-patch with a bold white sashing to give it a modern twist.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love both bundles and would happily use either. With it I'd like to Cathedral Window placemats and a table runner to go with them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The ruby range has been on my wishlist for as long as I've known about it! I'd make them into a medallion quilt heavy on flying geese, with a solid but textured background fabric like Essex Linen in black or dark grey so they'd really glow.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love the Moonlight bundle. I have been planning in my head a reverse applique quilt with Oakshott 4-patch circles that rotate across the quilt showcasing the different hues of these beautiful shot cottons. It would be lovely to get the opportunity to make my plans a reality!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love both bundles-so whichever you send would be so fun to work with. I see something with arrows/triangles-a small wall hanging and would pair with a bright white.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love both sets, and think they'd both work for my idea. I'd like to use them to make a quilt, using half square triangles to make star blocks. The background would be using various low volume prints, to allow the Oakshott solids to pop. The main body of each star would use just the Oakshott fabric.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Both are beautiful! I think I would go for the rubies, though. Can't resist orange! I have a picture in my mind of a throw-size quilt with postage-stamp areas and strips. Light gray background.
Thanks for a chance to win--and it was fun to think this through.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would like to use the moonlight bundle to make a quilt for my good friends Christopher and Adam as a wedding present. The colours would fit with their personal aesthetic, and I think I would try and find a print with books or text on to mix in with it as they are lovers of books, maybe http://www.cottonpatch.co.uk/acatalog/Tim-Holtz-Fabric--Eclectic-Elements--Dictionary--Neutral.html, pattern wise something like http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/236x/66/d7/c0/66d7c0792c8ffd39c32f93117b85c8cc.jpg from cluckclucksew.com with something like http://www.cottonpatch.co.uk/acatalog/Pearl-Bracelets-pearl-Fabric.html for the back.

  28. The Moonlight is crying out for me to make my husband a waistcoat. He wears a three piece suit to work and I can't help thinking those beautiful jewel colours poking out would look amazing. I'm not sure 1/8" cuts would be enough though, and I'd only need them for the front... I think I'd better stop trying to win them and just buy them!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I very much want to make a churn dash quilt (throw size) with churns of varying sizes and a variety of neutral solids...including ash. I would be happy with either bundle but I really really like the one on the bottom.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would love to use Moonlight as the base fabrics for a Victorian themed crazy quilt I want to make memorializing my family ancestry - I see embellishments of old tatting, old buttons, cameos, pictures printed, ribbon flowers in deep eggplants and rose, ribbons of deep olive green velvet and beadwork in ivory and green. 31. I love both bundles in entirely different ways. My suggested project would be a small quilt using the Moonlight bundle. It would be the silhouette of a bird or birds in a tree, showing just a couple of branches, not the whole tree. The scene would be very early morning, so the colors are subdued. I actually saw something like that recently when I got in the car to drive my husband to work early one morning.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think I'd go for Rubies, though both collections are stunning. I'd like to make a variety of Lone Star blocks, using two colors per star. I can envision a bright happy quilt from the different star blocks.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would love to make a Lonestar quilt with the Moonlight bundle...yummy!
    Amanda

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would love either. With the moonlight I would make accent pillows with floral to go in the guest bedroom.

  35. This comment has been removed by the author.

  36. I love the dark colours!! I would probably make a mini quilt to hang on the wall--perfectly rich :-). I have the Vintage Quilt Revival book and I love the cut glass baby quilt. I think that I would do something like that!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love the moonlight palate. I would make a wall hanging. I have in mind an aztec style pattern, either using HSTs or paper piecing. Love those earthy tones!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Love those dark colours!! I would make a quilt for my bedroom... we are due and the lap quilt just doesn't cut it!!

    1. Ooops! Forgort to tell you that I want to make a gradiant pattern from dark to light to dark using 5" or 6" squares on point. I see it in my mind and it will look stunning!!!

  39. Both bundles are so beautiful. I favor the Rubies bundle because my wedding colors were saturated pink, orange, and midnight blue. I never made myself a wedding quilt, so I would use the Rubies bundle to make a Dresden Plate quilt (12 petals, one of each color!) and set the Dresdens on a midnight blue background.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The pinks are taking me forward to my Bleeding Hearts flowers that will be blooming later after this long white winter. I'd do a fun little applique quilt of a branch of Bleeding Hearts with some Bleeding Heart sketching for background quilting.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I would make a set of pillow covered with the Ruby collection. Using all of the fabrics in stripes making it look like a rainbow.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Moonlight is my choice. They will go perfectly with some Japanese prints I got last October at Quilt Market in Houston. I'm making a kimono style robe.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have a table topper pattern that would show off either of these stacks.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Rubies bundle would be lovely for a economy block pillow cover with some florals, and for the Moonlight, an small quilt featuring triangle with low volume fabric contrasting them.

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have never done a sampler quilt, so I would like to use the Moonlight bundle to make one! I'm thinking either the Solstice Stars sampler from Daith, Lee and Katie or Amy's Virtual Quilting Bee blocks!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yum! Moonlight bundle to do a flying geese wall hanging.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I would love to use the Rubies bundle for an Irish Chain quilt.
We just bought an old caravane, and I am planning to redecorate it in Red an White, and this bundle just fits in my palette ;)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm hooked on Ruby - love pinks and oranges. I'd be aiming for a wall hanging of flames falling like raindrops on a deep blue background.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love both those bundles, but think I'd go for the rubies for this quilt. Quilt would be a wonky pinwheel on a sketch black/white background. Mixed colours in each pinwheel block (can't yet decide whether I'd do random mix in each block or tonal). Such gorgeous bundles again!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I want to make a tumbling blocks quilt using Rami Kim's "No-Sew" method. I'm taking her class this weekend to learn how and would love to do it again with these gorgeous Oakshotts. I would be happy with either bundle; I can see a plan for either one. I would pair them with other solids to create the tri-color blocks.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That Rubies bundle makes me think of sunsets, so I'd probably pair it with a grey (Kona Coal or Charcoal) and make something like this quilt at Tea Rose Home.

That or I'd do another Mod Rail Fence quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I would used the Rubies with some print charm packs I have on hand to make quilt from Thomas Knauer's new book.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I would pick the Rubies and do something with HSTs and a dark background, maybe a dark blue/navy I think.

    ReplyDelete
  54. i just saw the perfect quilt for the Rubies bundle, it's an X and plus block in the Feb '14 edition of American Patchwork and quilting. The quilt is called Perfect Union, but what i liked was the way the warm (would be the oakshots) are the pluses and bright scrappy goodness for the rest in cool tones, no white. lol and i wouldn't make it quite as big, maybe baby sized. The Oakshots really do need a nice place to showoff and i think it would be perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Moonlight would be great to make bags (purses) and applique on top with some stitchery too. I have a new pattern for a Quattro bag. crystalbluern at onlineok dot com

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ooh rubies is gorgeous!
I'd love to use my simple butterfly pattern and make a quilt top of lots of different coloured butterflies- a sort of colour wash of butterflies. They would definitely be larger than the original 5 inch butterfly pattern, and an initial thought is that there might be a variety of sizes in the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm making a picture quilt made with different sized Dresden plates. When I saw the brights I knew they would be great for my flower Dresdens. The darks would work great for my bike, or the ferris wheel, or some other ideas I have on the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love Rubies, and I want to make a paper pieced star quilt on black or grey. I have several stars picked out, and was just waiting for the right colors to make a bright quilt. I am sure these will do it. I can follow up on the other requirements too.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ok so Im thinking a tumbling blocks type quilt in the rubies, using the different shades to get the depth and 3D type effect. Clear as mud yes?

    ReplyDelete
  60. I've been wanting to make a tumbler quilt for a while, hand quilted densely (maybe 1/2" apart) with perle cotton in vertical lines. I think it would look beautiful in the Moonlight bundle

    ReplyDelete
  61. I've never made prairie points and the colours in Rubies are so yummy that they called out to me "make us into a prairie point cushion". I am usually too ambitious and start something to big but a Rubies PP cushion could be just the project to keep me under control whilst I go wild with colour.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'd love to make a Dresden plate table runner. I'd use Rubies so the Dresden plates look like suns, nice and bright for spring!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love the moonlight colour way. I am imagining a table runner maybe with a double wedding ring theme.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I just got all these wonderful scraps at a swap and want to make a half square triangle quilt, most likely arranged in diamonds, perhaps alternating diagonal rows of solids and prints or lighter and darker fabrics. I got some darker floral prints that would look amazing with Moonlight or I always love bright fabrics and Rubies would like wonderful with those!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I have a newborn baby boy and would love to make some caps for him out of the darker fabrics! Maybe some newsboy caps or sun hats. And a patchy pair of shorts to match. I've been working on new pants/shorts styles for all my boys. (4!!).

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love the Rubies collection, I would love to take the Ruby bundle and add some cream and maybe a few florals to make a double star lap quilt for my neighbor. Thank you for the chance to win. Have a great weekend. :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. That moonlight collection is just glorious. Having just moved to the uk from Australia, my sewing machine is still in transit, so I'd like to do an EPP pillow cover using hexagons, and using that palest grey to add in la couple of little heart shapes, something like this bee block I did recently: http://www.flickr.com/photos/59466258@N04/12567818475/

    ReplyDelete
  68. Gosh, they are both so gorgeous and both or either of them would play nicely in a chevron pattern with some of my Kaffe fabrics for a lovely 15 x 16 (or so) quilted handbag.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh those rubies would make a perfect bunch of tulips!

Would make some utterly gorgeous cottage tulip blocks like these

    ReplyDelete
  70. I can see the rubies in a log cabin type quilt with neutrals. I can see court house steps. Oooh! But I would be happy with either packet. Oh, now my mind is working on the Moonlight packet.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  71. I would have to go with moonlight and I would really like to make a pillow with some sort of paper pieced star!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Love these bundles! I would use the ruby bundle to create bright butterfly blocks dancing across a dark background, like Lizzy House's pearl bracelets in midnight. This would really show off the luminosity of the oakshotts. I would quilt it densely with variegated threads that picked up on the colors of the oakshotts.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I love both bundles!! I would make an improv balloon or sunrise quilt with the rubies
And I would make an improv squares across an Essex linen ground to highlight the ludicrousness of the moonlight line. I am givbludplayhocky on IG.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Jeepers, what a choice! I absolutely love both groups. With the ruby group, I would choose to make a small or miniature lone star of some sort, probably a broken star, to take advantage of the luminescence of that group. I'd use a creamy warm light background (I think) or a very pale gray -- whichever would audition best to show off the fabrics in the star. With the Moonglow bundle, I'd make the churndash/hole in a barn door quilt that I have been envisioning for years to be made out of toned down shot cottons if I ever managed to collect enough of them. I'm not exactly sure what I'd use for backgrounds -- maybe a creamy yellowish gray and variations thereof, depending on the primary block tonal value (I don't know how to define it but I know it when I see it!). In any event, it's been a pleasure reading all of the comments and ideas about what people would make. A mental quilt show, so to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It would be so fun to use the moonlight bundle to create different paper pieced stars using a white fabric in the centers, like looking at a moon lit star studded sky!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I would love to use the Rubies bundle to make a wall hanging of origami fabric pinwheels with all those fabulous oranges and pinks. This fabric would be perfect for the pinwheel design as the folds would show how the light changes the colour of the shot cottons. I would use a dark plain fabric as the background for the design.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I am sewing a simple 4 patch scrappy quilt and I don't have enough solid colored scraps! This bundle would be perfect for me. Such beautiful colors!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Forgot to add the quilt is for my daughter-in-law who loves the color yellow so any shades of yellow and orange would really help me out!

      Delete
  78. I would make either a mini quilt or a pair of cushions. I would use the rubies set and cut them into strips. I would then piece them very simply in a colour gradient style with orange washing into red then into pink. I would then appliqué a black city scape over the bottom edge. The effect would be a city silhouetted against the sunset. I would quilt simple straight line rays in the coloured section and in the black section I would use black thread to create the suggestion of further details in the cityscape.
    Thanks for the great opportunity!
