Designing for Dashwood Studio

Designing quilts is the thing I like to do best of all.  Along with making them and writing up the pattern.  Those three things keep me happily occupied in all the spare time I can get my hands on.  Dashwood Studio asked me to design and make a couple of quilts from two of their new lines, Wildwood and Annali.  Because my head is full of romantic nonsense, the palette in the Wildwood line, made me think of native american or navajo images and that led me to this design.

Which turned into this quilt.  Which I quilted densely with horizontal lines using a white Aurifil 50wt - which gave the quilt (in my head anyway) the feel of a native american rug.

And the leaves and natural shapes in the Annali line made me think of natural shapes and I came up with these simple leaves.

I was going to quilt veins on the leaves to make them more leafy but, when I gave it a trial run, it really looked very amateur hour and took away from the simplicity of the design so I did a spot of unpicking and gave up on that idea.  So I doubled up the quilting I'd already done which was a diagonal cross hatch using cream Aurifil 50wt which is pretty much my favourite quilting (at least my favourite within my own limited quilting powers).

And then I added a final little detail to both quilts which is a strip of selvedge in the binding.  I've been asked to do a tutorial on this little detail and I will do once I have mastered the art.  In the meantime, it seems to involve an excessive amount of sewing, unpicking, re-sewing, cutting too short, unpicking, re-sewing and possibly a few choice swear words along the way.  It's like the maths of this simple little step defeats me at every turn.

  1. Beautiful quilts. I like the simple quilting. I always seem to over complicate my quilting. I think I'll be inspired by you on the next quilt xx

  2. I really like both quilts Lynne - especially the Annali one (probably as I'm drawn to that fabric more)
Great work and it's really nice to see a UK line of fabrics

  6. I love your designs and the selvedge idea is genius! That would also be a nice way to sign a quilt or incorporate a little message or something!

  8. Your Annali quilt is beautiful: such simplicity of shape. But appearances can be deceptive: curved seams I have yet to master. Do you have a tutorial on curved seams? (I'm off to look now.)

  16. very cute idea to include selvedge in the binding. Do you sew yours to the front & then flip to the back? or vice versa? Would it be easier to add it in at the 1st of the sewing as opposed to the last end of the binding? hmmm, I'll have to try it!
