And the Jubilee Project on a Budget will be...

So three days ago I asked for ideas for a project on a budget and there were some fabulous ideas and one slightly barmy one.   So the winner will now head on over to Abakhan Fabrics and pick out £20 worth of whatever she needs to make her project.  Abakhan will send them to her free and she will then make her chosen project and give us a tute telling us how so that we can make it too.

You may have heard me talk about my older sister on this blog before.  She has been kind enough to follow me right from day one leaving comments on almost every post with varying degrees of wisdom ranging from none to not much and with varying degrees of hilarity ranging from funny to very funny.  So I have chosen her to be the wise old bird guest judge and she has picked Miss Beau Jangles idea of a jubilee themed bag that could fold out and be used as a picnic blanket:

So I will be getting in touch with Miss Beau Jangles and cannot wait to see this project (and maybe make it for myself too).  And my sister has just very kindly reminded me of the one time I attempted to make a picnic rug cum bag.  The quilt itself was ugly.

I backed it using an "attractive" shade of brown - no additional piecing or design, just a whole slab of brown. And no pretty binding, just the black frame turned over onto the back.

Some additional attractive features are my choice of black thread for the quilting, the holes in the quilt (for example in the green triangle) where cheap polyester wadding peeks through and the fact that I clearly got bored of quilting and stopped doing extra lines after the inner row.

As a final touch, I added this attractive set of handles and velcro strap so it can be folded carried to and from picnics with ease. Look at the pretty zigzagging on the velcro strap - also in black thread.

  1. Can't wait to see Miss Beau Jangles bagrug. Lily made one a few years ago. We could compare them... And now I keep hearing Nina Simone singing Mr Bojangles in my head.

  2. Yes, but do you use it? Miss Beau Jangles can bring hers to London and we can all go out to a park on Sunday for lunch and squeeze onto it.

    1. I'm not going to London, feels like everyone else in the world is going :(

  3. When we not like something, it shows!!! I had a giggle when I saw the you tube quilts name - I read it as They Out Ube - too early after a long week!!

  4. It looks like a very useable picnic quilt to me. The sort that's nice and dark so you are not stressing about muddy feet on the white fabric :-) That sort of quilts often gets more use than the light and bright heirloom quilted ones!

  5. Congrats to MBJ - looking forward to seeing the finished masterpiece :)

  6. Nope, doesn't even look good casually slung over that lovely slatted chair. And picnic rugs in Britain have to be waterproof.

  7. Congrats to the winner, and, err, no, your version would not be accompanying me to a picnic (should it ever stop raining), sorry!

  8. AAAAAHHHHH! I am so excited, thank you, thank you! :)

  9. Congrats to miss Beau Jangles! And Lynne, tut tut. You're being so overly scathing.

  10. I think you have hurt it's feeling Lynne!

  11. Maybe I'm weird, but I actually like the simplicity of your picnic quilt! And the way the colors and light and dark play with each other....

  12. At least you wouldn't have to worry about it getting muddy...or drifting out to sea when the tide turns unexpectedly...and you certainly wouldn't have to turn round ten miles into your journey home after realising you've left it behind...
Congratulations to Miss Beau Jangles! (Although I'll confess to being slightly disappointed that we're not going to see LJ's patchwork castle cat bed but at least Archie won't start demanding one for himself!)

  13. Love that blanket. My first (only) picnic quilt is huge, or so I thought. Actually about 48x48. Which works really well with my 5'9 self and 6'5 husband. Let alone 2 kids. What was I thinking? ;)

  14. Congrats to Miss Beau Jangles. Lynne, I bet you know how to patch that hole, maybe with some patchwork?

  15. Okay, I agree the browning backing is less than lovely, but I actually like the front side of your picnic quilt. I really like Amish generally, it's true, and I like the geometric simplicity of this. Different tastes and all that?

  16. Everything you touch turns to gold.

  17. Oh dear, the pressure is on, Miss Beau Jangles! Congrats on your win, but keep in mind how Lynne has set the bar quite "attractively" for the picnic quilt! LOL Fun post Lynne!

  18. Those handles and straps are a great idea for a picnic blanket.

  19. I rather like the picnic rug - just nice and jolly for a picnic.

  20. Not liking the sound of a 'cum bag'!

  21. I'm glad to say you've come a long way baby. I'd still be quite happy to use this on a muddy field in a pinch, though.

  22. This really made me laugh and also made me hopeful for my future projects, maybe I can improve as much as you have.

  23. (!(and giggles) at Flying Blind.)
Well it might not be your most gorgeous quilt, but it obviously does get used - and I have t admit I would not want to use really lovely fabric on the back of a picnic quilt - I'd be sobbing when it got mucky - or even worse - stained.

  24. It doesn't actually look too bad! The colours blend well together and I actually like brown fabric! =D
