Am I odd?

I wonder if I am the only person who prefers someone else to choose their fabrics for them.  I've only just realised this fact about myself.  If I shop online, I have to buy a whole line or nothing.  I can't buy a bit of this and a bit of that, it's just too scary.  The same in a shop, I can't just grab a load of FQs and put them all together - it's a FQ bundle, a layer cake, a jelly roll or nothing.  So I decided to join a FQ club and see how that went.  I saw that the Eternal Maker have FQ clubs so I thought I'd just jump on in.  Only of course I was unable to choose which one, so I joined all three.  They have a Japanese FQ club, a designer FQ club and a moda FQ club.  This is December's designer bundle.  Beautiful muted tones with a little bit of quirkiness thrown in.

Because I joined all three, I got a bumper box of fabrics someone else chose for me in the mail this week.  I can confidently say that there is not one print in there I would have picked out in my LQS BUT I adore them.  Firstly I would say that the buyer at Eternal Maker clearly has a good eye and a definite perspective.  These fabrics are what I think of as "cool" fabrics.  Like the cool gang at school.  When I shop I seem to miss the cool fabrics.  Don't ask me why, I just do.  I try to be cool and choose the cool fabrics but I just don't.  The bundle below one is the Japanese bundle for December.  Elephants, robots and the front one is a linen with buttons all over it.  Someone in my family might like that made into a cushion.  Let's see if she reads this post and notices...

So I'm buying into cool.  I'm asking Eternal Maker to bring a touch of cool into my stash.  One thing which Eternal Maker do is to include a note with each bundle telling you what is in there.  Now I know I should have read those notes and digested them and then told you what was in these bundles but I am ashamed to say I put them somewhere safe and for the life of me I can't find them.   The bundle below is the Moda bundle.  Now I vaguely remember reading in the note that these were Bunny Hill fabrics which I confess never leapt out at me on the Moda website but, in person, they are so soft, muted, gentle and, you know, cool.

No specific plans for any of these as yet but I like that they add into my stash fabrics that I wouldn 't have thought to add myself.

  1. Loving the Japanese bundle. Do you really want me to answer the Am I Odd question??!!

  2. Well if you are odd then so am I. I find that my brain gets confused with too much choice. I'm not 'arty' so find precuts and bundles give me the reassurance that the fabrics blend. I know some folks look down on this approach but it works for me! :)

  3. Wish I had a pound for everyone who has been in my classes and said "oh I can't put fabrics/colour together..." They then go on to make perfectly lovely quilts. My early stuff is pretty bogging and I am also beginning to come round to bundles.I use the and make them up in our shop, which is fun.
In the early days I would buy an odd fq here and there and find them lurking in a drawer 10yrs later - selected bundles are so much more useful.

  4. No you are NOT odd, because if you are I am too. I rarely choose odd FQ's of fabric to have some project in mind - I've never bought a whole FQ selection of a fabric line but I have bought 5 and 5+ batches of fabric line FQ's - that's probably why I've been doing my FQ challenge projects picking one (and now considering a few FQ's) with solids for a project

  5. This seemed like a grand idea, so I had a look at the site. Is my maths wrong or is it a really expensive way to buy fabric?

  6. I am not going to answer that question Lynne.
    Love the Japanese bundle!
My word verification of the day is 'enemety' sounds like it should be a word but it isn't.

  7. I love bundles, too! Especially when shopping online, it makes things easier and I also like the "randomness" aspect, like you. It's great that there are some fabrics in there that I wouldn't have chosen, it gives a variety to my stash and projects that otherwise wouldn't be there. Also, I can totally relate to the cool factor ... :-)

I love that button fabric!!! Is there ANY chance you know what manufacturer it's from?

  8. Using already made up bundles is easy, but with all the wonderful fabric out there, you are missing a chance to be creative yourself, make something unique. If you choose your own, you may make a "mistake" but you also will make a quilt that is totally you, go to the fabric store and make a mess, make combinations without buying any fabric, I always pull lots and lots of bolts but I always promise to put it all back. Be wild and have fun!!!!!

  9. My favorite part of quilting is picking out the fabric. But not everyone does. Nothing odd at all. Different strokes and all that.

  10. Not odd, just different from me! I'd much rather choose my own fabric but I do find it much more difficult online than in person and wish I had a modern LQS near me. Mine is good but doesn't have any of the "cool" fabrics but then I'm not cool either! Love the FQs you got from EM - I wish I lived closer to them!

  11. I love the part of picking out and buying fabric. When I get a bundle there is usually something in it that I don't like and don't want to use.
When I pick my own, the only reason I don't use it is that I know when I do it will be gone and I may never find it again.

  12. You know, looking at my stash, perhaps I ought to let someone else choose my fabrics lol Others make such cool and sophisticated things, and I, err, don't...

  13. Yes you are but that's why we love you! I had the designer bundle this month too, it is definitely not something I would have chosen myself but I love it all the same :-)

  14. I like to buy from a collection myself! I have a hard time mixing and matching and being satisfied with the outcome, but I am getting better. Maybe it comes natural to some.

  15. I look forward to seeing what you make with those fabrics. I think you have a wonderful eye for fabric combinations, but it is far harder to buy them online.

  16. Love that Elephant material! Can't wait to see what you do with these!

  17. I am the same! I always stick to collections and wish I could mix and match!

  18. For years, I only purchased fabric with my more experienced quilter friend with me, and my stash consisted only of fabric leftover from fabrics. Eventually (slowly) I was able to pick out fabric for myself, and only in the last year have I purchased fabrics specifically for my stash. Though I do love choosing my own, I also love precuts. And fat quarter stacks often give me a new perspective on what goes together - all of it is fun!

  19. After reading the other commenters, I think I may be the odd one. I love choosing a wide range of fabrics, for my stash and for specific quilts.

  20. We can be odd together because I'm the same. I, at least, have someone with me to help pick out fabric. Seem to be drawn to medium toned fabric and them my quilts come out looking a bit boring.

  21. We must be opposites...let me loose in a fabric store and I'm in heaven. For me the cool factor is not even in the equation, I buy what I love.

About the odd part...we probably have that in common.

  22. Not odd, very very cool!!
I just tend to bunch together what I have and buy some more if I need it and see something I think would work. I'm a bit haphazard like that! The only time I bought fabric with one thing in mind was for the DSQAL!

  23. 1. Odd? Hell yeah.

    2. It's NOT odd to use another eye for fabric choosing ... what's to fix?

When it comes to the quilt making you're the one who puts all those colours/patterns together so brilliantly !

I love the Eternal Maker's bundles and clubs too. They have such lovely fabric.

I've still never bought a mixed bundle! I've always mixed my own, but I'd love to be able to lose control a bit and improv the sourcing as well as the stitchin ... hmmmm ...

  24. Not odd at all. For this reason I like to buy from shops that put together their own bundles, so it's a bit more unique and varied than all from one line, but still someone who could see the fabric in person and with an experienced eye knows they go together. :)

Fabricworm is probably my favorite for these custom bundles.

  25. I'm the opposite. The only times I have used fabrics from one line in a single project were with lines that I love every single print. I find though, that there are prints I don't care for, so I don't tend to buy a whole line. I mix and match from all over because of the freedom of it and because it is unexpected. In some lines I only care for one print in one colorway, so I buy just that one.

I feel odd in this because I see so many people say that they cannot mix and match, or don't feel comfortable with it.

  26. I am so with you on the choices thing. I always buy the entire line of fabrics. I just cannot choose and pick and match fabrics from other lines. BORING, that's me. But all your makes are lovely

    ReplyDelete
  27. No, clearly you are not odd, nor are you alone! Me, I'm not odd too, I'll buy bundles and I love to pick my own too, better still mix it all up! lol Lovely bundles, all of them! :)

  28. When the girls come to stay, I'll get them to help you choose - you'll learn quick how to do it alone then!

  29. What an awesome service! I wish they could mail to the US...

  30. Yes, you are...but no more than most.

I'm that way when I shop for clothes. I want to have a whole outfit or nothing.

  31. OMG - thanks for sharing this!! I'm not the only one and I had no idea there were clubs for this. Awesome.

  32. I've heard of people who come in and pull fabric from my stash to see what they pair with what I already have. I haven't had it happen but I'd like to!

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's not just you. I'm totally sheepish about putting together color combos as well. I hope it's a skill I can learn, though. Who knows. It may be something you have an eye for . . . or you don't. Time will tell, I guess ;-)
