Hexalong - without the hexagons

Now because I am kind to you all, I know that there are some of you out there who are reluctant to join a Hexalong because you don't like hexagons.  You were forced to sew together hexagons at school.  You think Grandmother's Flower Garden is old fashioned.  Hexagons just don't appeal to you.  And so Lynne comes to the rescue - you can join hex-a-long without the hexagons.  You can make stars and triangles.  You can make this Storm in a Fruit Salad quilt (inspired by this Storm at Sea quilt and this Fruit Salad quilt). You can join in this Hexalong at any time and use the templates I am using or just do your own thing.  The starter post for the HAL is here.  Share anything you make in the Lily's Quilts Flickr Group.

Here's what you need to do (go to earlier hexalong posts for more detailed information about each step of the way):

1.   Print out your incompetech equilateral triangle sheets.  Go here for more information.

2.   Cut them into the sized triangles you want to work with - mine are about 3 1/2" long on each side.

4.   Baste fabric onto four triangles.  Three coloured and one solid or neutral.  Sew the four triangles together with the solid or neutral in the middle.  I'm using some Kona charcoal from Simply Solids with some Happy Mochi Yum Yum from Fat Quarter Shop and some Anthology and other fabrics from Sew Fresh Fabrics.  I am piecing with Aurifil 50wt.

5.   Sew six of these together to make a star.

TAL anyone? Scrappy Mochi Yum Yum

6.   Sew on some more.

Bigger HAL scrappy MYY

7.   Sew on even more.  Voila, you have the makings of your very own Storm in a Fruit Salad.

  10. Ooooh, I love triangles, hexagons, and bright colors: SIAFS is delightful and very tempting. The reason I'm not hexing along is the towering pile of WIPs/UFOs devouring my sewing room. I'm enjoying reading along, though, and dreaming of future projects.
