My name is Lynne and I make quilts. Obsessively. I can say that out loud now but it's taken me a long time to come out of the quilting closet and I'm not "out" to everyone. Some people think it's dorky. Some people laugh at me. Some people try to persuade me that making other patchwork items might be a better alternative, like patchwork waistcoats.
But anyway, today it's one whole year since the very day when I walked nervously into a local quilt shop, bought a rotary cutter, cutting mat, a jelly roll and a bit of yardage. I exited that shop feeling guilty and excited. I came home and dusted off the ancient sewing machine I bought with the £100 left to me when Grandpa McLaren died 30 years or so ago. And I made a quilt. It was a Moda Bake Shop design by Natalia Bonner, called "I'm Blushing" made with a Blush jelly roll. The LQS didn't have the Blush jelly roll but they did have a Farmer's Market jelly roll so my version is called: "I'm Farming". For a few weeks and months, my long suffering Welsh husband would exclaim several times a day "You're obsessed", sometimes more than once in an hour. After a whole year I think he's accepted that I'm obsessed. So anyhow, happy quiltaversary to me.

ReplyDeleteWow! Is this your first quilt??
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed!
Wow and what a year! Congratulations on your Quiltaversary! This requires a very psecial celebration indeed! (Obsessed - No! Driven? - Yes!)
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltiversary from me too! What a wonderful year.
ReplyDeleteCocktails for breakfast sounds like a great tradition for a quiltiversary!
I meant Quiltaversary, hmm proof reading helps!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary!
ReplyDeleteI wonder whether all husbands think the same way ;D
Out and Proud Lynne!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary !!
I'd be really interested to know WHAT WAS THE TRIGGER? Why did you walk into that LQS in the first place?
(We're all jolly pleased you did, btw !)
Have one on me. And when he says 'obsessed', just whisper 'Led' back.
ReplyDeleteoooh, and start with Sandi Henderson, nice!

Clare
Are you kidding? You've only been patching and quilting for a year!!!!!!!!!!! You are now officially AMAZING!!! I am truly in awe of your ability! A Moda quilt to boot! Congratulations Lynne, I want to be as talented as you one day!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary!!
ReplyDeleteI know that feeling!! I'm hooked too! In 3 years I've gone from no quilting knowledge to teaching friends and family the basics, although I'm still learning lots too.
I can't believe you've only been quilting a year. Hope I'm as good after a year. And this was your first. Wow
ReplyDeleteDo you still find you have to justify your quilt making? My husband keeps asking "what's it for". I find I have no answer!
Heck woman you've come a long long way in one year - well done and congratulations
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary Lynne! I can't believe you've only been quilting for a year, that's amazing! Quilting is very rock and roll I tell you, nothing dorky around here ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary - surely you've not only been quilting a year? You're so good!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary....may you have many, many more!!!
ReplyDeleteYour obsession is our gain. I love your work!
ReplyDeleteCan't believe you have only been quilting a year. When I came across your blog I thought you'd been doing it..forever!! Happy quiltiversary!
ReplyDeleteYou have found your metier! Happy quiltiversary!
ReplyDeleteThat is too funny - my quiltaversary is coming up, too, in another couple of weeks. Congratulations on an amazing year!! I hope you celebrate with some wonderful cake :)
ReplyDeleteLynne, congratulations on your quiltaversary!! Only a year? I am so impressed!! :) Did you take any classes or were you already a seamstress? All I can say is, I know I have been enjoying your obsession! :) Hugs!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your one year quiltaversary!! Keep up the beautiful work you do!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I read today's post I just had to share something I heard on TV the other day. Some man made a comment to a woman about her getting old and she said, "pretty soon you are going to tell me I should take up quilting". I was so offended!!! No wonder we feel "odd" about our hobby. It used to have such a taboo but I really think it is getting better....slowly. We need shout it from the rooftops and show off our work so that people can see that quilting is not our grandmother's hobby anymore!! Be proud girl!!
ReplyDeleteYou should celebrate with lots of fattening goodies - Layer Cakes, Honey Buns and Jelly Rolls!!! By the way, my hubby says I'm obsessed too - hooray for obsession!!! Happy quiltiversary!!
ReplyDeleteso glad you shared it with all of us...it is beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that was your first quilt! I've been quilting for a few years now, and I'm actually about to make the same quilt for my new little one. I'm not using the "blushing" jellyroll either, but rather a "giddy" jelly because I love how bright and fun it is. Congrats on your one year milestone!!! Here's hoping you have several more!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteSeriously?! It's only been one year! (My mouth is hanging open in shock) You've progressed at light speed and made some amazing quilts. Can't wait to see what you've accomplished on your two year quiltaversary.
ReplyDeleteJust look at how much you have achieved in this past year, amazing ! xx
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your Quiltaverary!! And I too am amazed that this was your first quilt!!
ReplyDeleteI had a similar first quilt store experience, loving all the fabric and color. I bought some, but I still have the fabric! I have never cut into it!!
Happy 1st quiltaversary to you. Tell hubby at least you are making useful and pretty things, and making people happy, not just keeping the material to look at.Love the quilt you have shown. Very pretty.
ReplyDeleteHow inspirational that you have achieved so much in just one year! Happy Quiltaversary and here's to many more!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! Looks like you are hooked and we can enjoy more eyecandy from you in the future!
ReplyDeleteyay! happy quiltaversary!!don't worry, you are not alone =P
ReplyDeleteSay it loud and proud: I'M A QUILTER! And you're a darn good one at that. I'm not sure who these people are that think it's dorky but methinks they need a slap upside the head. :D
ReplyDeleteAnd...patchwork WAISTCOATS? What..? WHO are these people and WHY would they say such a thing?!
You've come a long way, baby. But can't believe that gem was your first quilt!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is just your first quiltaversary? You have made so many fabulous projects, I cannot imagine the wonderful things that will follow!
ReplyDeleteOnly your first!!!??? I am so in awe - congratulations!! You have a true talent, I am so jealous!
ReplyDeleteWell, you're obviously a natural if that is your first quilt! Congratulations. Cannot wait to see what the next year brings!
ReplyDeleteHappy quiltiversary Lynne! If I remember rightly, you do have a secret quilty past, don't you?! What a huge amount you've achieved this year - congratulations, you are a real inspiration :) Gosh, it won't be long until you have your first blogiversary too - I didn't realise I'd been keeping up with you for so long, lol.
ReplyDeleteWow! You've come leaps and bounds in a year! I love that your quilt is called "I'm Farming!" It made em laugh out loud! Here's to many more years of quilting--and I'll bet you'll get to a patchwork waistcoat someday!
ReplyDeleteCongrats - how exciting! You were definitely born to become a quilter - you have a wonderful eye. Hooray for quilting and quilters!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary to you:) Love your beautiful quilt:)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations....All that in one year.....amazing. Do you have some other sewing history???? Did you at least know a little about sewing when you started??? Love your stuff and your blog.....keep obsessing or however you spell it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary indeed. You have accomplished a lot in a year. Your quilts are lovely and I can definitely relate to the obsession. I'm obsessed too!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary! I cannot believe you have been quilting for just one year-- you seem to have mastered it already in that short time!
ReplyDeleteWell done on surviving a year of quilting and still loving it! That's a terrific first quilt, and to have garnered so many people reading your blog is wonderful too. Many more of them (quilts, anniversaries, readers etc).
ReplyDeleteHappy Quilterversary! Today is the first time I`ve seen your blog and I can`t believe you have been quilting for only a year. Like you, I have one foot out of the closet - people think quilting is so Little House on the Prairie, not realizing how gorgeous quilts can be and how obsessive this pastime is. Like you again, I`ve had a bit of a Union Jack thing going on - in fact, the only quilt I have finished is a Union Jack quilt. Anyway, congratulations!
ReplyDeletecongratulations on a awesome year!!! you have made a lot of amazing stuff...you are clearly inthe right to be obsessed!!! you are a natural
ReplyDeleteone of uuuuussss...one of usssss.....
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the club! And happy quiltiversary!!
Welcome to the club, we're all obsessed I think!! Your quilt is wonderful! Great job.
ReplyDeleteYou made an awesome first quilt.
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary and quilting is NOT for dorks!!!!
ReplyDeleteOnly a year, you're a natural. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI agree...what's the patchwork waist coats?! lol Maybe a pillow...but seriously..I have a bit of an aversion right now to patchwork clothes though. It needs to be done in a really cool way. Although if anyone could do it, it would be you.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on everything you've accomplished in the just the last 6 months or so. You are amazingly talented and just wow us all with each new item you make. You're one smart cookie!
Happy Quiltaversary to you!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary to you!
Happy Quiltaversary toooo yooouuuuuu!
Happy Quiltaversary to you!
And MANY MORE :)
And hats off to you for coming out of the closet so quickly. Sewing girls ROCK!
I can't believe it's only been a year! And not only that, you dove right in and started up two sewing Bee's right away! What was your motivation for doing that first quilt? I made my first quilt almost 2 years ago when I was pregnant and I was instantly addicted. I'm just sad I didn't start early, because now I don't have much free time!
ReplyDeleteCongrats - it being only one year means that I have followed you almost halfway. Well done!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats - although I can't believe you've only been quilting for one year - you are so, so talented. And believe me, your first quilt is much nicer than mine (it's made with old-lady florals!) Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary!!! Only one year!?! I can only imagine what you'll accomplish in the next year!! Nothing wrong with being obsessed!!
ReplyDeleteYou have got to be kidding me! Only one year of quilt obsession and you are this talented! You were obviously hiding your undiscovered light under a bushel for far too long. I've been dabbling with quilting for many years but am always daunted by the thought of a whole quilt. Congratulations - you are an inspiration and as Racheldaisy says - absolutely nothing wrong with a little harmless obsession xxx
ReplyDeletecongrats, lynne! i'd never think that you quilt "only" for 1 year...from your work i'd rather say 10 years experience & countless years of creativity :)
ReplyDeletehappy quiltaversary,
julia
If you're obsessive I'm borderline deranged...half way through a skiing holiday and already visited two quilt shops ;-)
ReplyDeletecongrats on a great year of sewing! I love your work.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your quiltaversary! Amazing first quilt, I love Natalia's pattern! Look forward to seeing what else you come up with this year :-)
ReplyDeleteWow I can't believe how much you have done in a year. I love the comment about waistcoats - if I had a FQ for every time someone asked me if thats what I made out of patchwork . . .
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your quiltaversary! Love your quilt, its on my list of to do's
ReplyDeleteMandy
Way to Go! You are indeed a quilt maker. Congratulations on your one year.
ReplyDeleteHappy Happy 'Versary to you!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary! That quilt is really lovely.
ReplyDelete76 well wishes already. Cripes. See, I'm always late to the party. You're a big fat liar. How could you be this incredible at quilting after only one year when I've been at it almost 10 already?!?!? Although equally obsessed, I cannot make any claims to equal talent. I love your creative abandon and 'go for it' attitude. I'm so happy you took up quilting, else we'd have never met :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary! I, too, am stunned that it has just been one year! Awesome! Are you still using the same machine?
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary! I hope you have many years ahead that are just as much fun:)
ReplyDeleteLaura T
Cheers! I refuse to admit how many years I've been quilting, but I will admit to my full out attempt to pull you to the dark side, er, I mean...teach you how to applique properly.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!! Your quilt is so beautiful, and I've bookmarked that pattern, love it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLike Krista above, I think you MUST be lying. Wow. I'm so glad I found your very inspirational blog. Happy quiltaversary
ReplyDeleteyea!!! :) It's so fun to see your stuff Lynne... (and chat on occasion too). :)
ReplyDeleteAm I understanding this..? It's been just a year since you started quilting? Just a year?! You must be kidding! I thought you had been quilting for at least several years because your quilts are always very professionally made and they are stunning! Congratulations, Lynne! And thank you for inspiration :)
ReplyDeleteWell done to you Lynne for coming out of the closet and having a fantastic year. Those who laugh and sneer just haven't got it yet and don't know what they are missing. You are an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteLove Shirley.xx
p.s. saw Jason Donovan in The Sound of Music on the opening night in Stoke and so he has to be one of my fabvourite things.
What a fab first quilt - you are obviously a natural!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltaversary!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Lynne!! I totally enjoy reading your blog and seeing everything your insanely creative mind comes up with! Can't wait to see what else you make! xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteI'm ever so glad you made that first trip to the quilt store! Happy Day to you and many, many more!
ReplyDeleteWow, only a year!!! You are a superstar ;) I am coming up on my one year as well....Crazy how much you can learn in that time, eh? Lots-o-fun!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome first quilt, so bright and sunny! Well done and happy quiltaversary
ReplyDeleteWow, it looks awesome. Congratulations on our quiltaversary!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's only been a year. You are amazing!!
ReplyDeleteHappy quiltaversary! Your 'I'm Farming' quilt is an awesome first quilt. When you were making your first quilt do you remember at what point you started thinking about your next project?
ReplyDeleteHappy quiltaversary! I'm sorry for being so late - I've been away on winter holidays. (and now the comment box is acting strange, not allowing me to post a comment)
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are beatiful and it's great to see how much you've achieved in just a year.
Happy quiltaversary! Love your quilt and I had forgotten about this pattern at Moda Bake Shop. I have a jelly roll that would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteSorry I am soooo far behind in my blog reading but HAPPY QUILTVERSARY!!! Better late than never I always say!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Quiltiversary! You truly are an inspiration,I'd love to get half as much done as you do! I am also not totally "out and proud" yet - my friends just don't get it - luckily my husband does (only because I totally put up with him being a 49yr old extreme downhill skateboarder who only just took it up 6 months ago :)).
ReplyDeletePS - I find patchwork waistcoats scary! Just my opinion...
