This week I made a Very Hungry Caterpillar quilt. Andover and Makower are bringing out new prints in the Very Hungry Caterpillar quilting cottons franchise and wanted a quilt to showcase them. I imagine that most of these quilts are made for kids under about 7 so I had the idea of an I-Spy type quilt with little fussy cut pictures from the prints framed in improv blocks. Of course this will become a downloadable pattern so the improv needed to be a little contained so I came up with a design which was kind of improv but also calculated and ordered so it was easy for someone to buy the fabrics, download the pattern and make the quilt.
So here they all are - caterpillars, butterflies, fruit with holes in and fruit without holes in - all in a kind of I-Spy quilt format. This is supposed to be a happy, fun, child friendly quilt.
And here it is in close up - little skinny 1/4" strips of bright colours frame each of the blocks in the quilt, all reflected in the colours of the dots on the sashing. And quilted in a cross hatch grid with Aurifil white 50wt - nice and clean and fresh.
And then I made a pieced back - it seemed like these large scale panels were too good to miss the opportunity to do something with them. I had in mind that the back of this quilt would be as fun as the front and would make a kind of giant playmat.
I'm still kind of sad there's no holes in the quilt... But that may have been challenging on the longevity front!
ReplyDeleteVery cute quilt! So colorful and happy.
ReplyDeleteI just made the old quilt pattern for the Very Hungry Caterpillar - your design is so much better - wish I'd waited!
ReplyDeleteI remember reading that book 10,000 times out loud, one of our favourites. The fabrics are excellent and your pattern is perfect to use with them.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Those little strips of color really pop.
ReplyDeleteSuper cool design.Love it!
ReplyDeleteI have used the Hungry Catapillar coordinates - geat texture pieces that pop in a quilt. This is such a cute quilt and love how you did the back.
ReplyDeleteJust adorable!
ReplyDeleteFabulous!
ReplyDeleteThe first time I ever wished my children were younger
ReplyDeleteSo cute! And one of my favourite children's books! Rx
ReplyDeleteliking the back of the quilt a bit better than the front - but the front is wonderful as well
ReplyDeleteSuch a great quilt. Looking forward to the pattern release.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. What a great design for any favourite fabrics
ReplyDeleteI love it and think you definitely lift the bar when it comes to these downloadable patterns from the manufacturers - some of them could do with taking a leaf or three from your book!
ReplyDeletegorgous quilt both front and back x
ReplyDeleteJust stunning, this is a quilt any child would love. iIwould be quite happy with it myself too!
ReplyDeleteI love the back of the quilt! The front is great too though.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun quilt! I am really liking pieced backs.
ReplyDeleteCute - and now I want a cake!
ReplyDeleteVery sweet! Love that the back is as cute as the front. As a long time quilter myself it seems to me that if you're going to spend the time and money not to mention heart and soul to make the front beautiful it's a missed creative opportunity to slap any old thing on the back. Glad you were creative!
ReplyDeleteOh, super cute
ReplyDeleteThis pattern would work well with many different fussy cut prints which wouldn't necessarily have to be for a child.
ReplyDeleteAny youngster would be so excited to get this quilt - Cute!
ReplyDeletePlease, more info on when and where this pattern will be released. C
