Made with Oakshott

Would you like a chance to play with some Oakshott fabrics?  Well this month, we are offering a Fat Quarter bundle of my choice of twelve of the new fifty-six colourshott shot cottons which Oakshott are currently having shipped over from India from their new weavers.  Heavier, wider and posibly more irridescent than their previous colourshotts, these will become available in the new year.

To be in with a chance of playing with these beautiful fabrics, here's what you need to do:
  • Leave a comment letting me know what you would make with these fabrics.
  • Be specific about your idea.  We won't pick someone who  says "I want to make a quilt" but might pick someone who says "I have in mind a quilt with ohio star blocks and I would mix the Oakshotts with low volume text prints".
  • Bear in mind in your proposal that we are offering a Fat Quarter bundle this month so will be unlikely to pick someone who wants to make something very small.
  • After a few days, we will pick our favourite project suggestion and one person will be sent the bundle.
  • All we ask of you is that you write a guest post for this blog containing photos of the finished item and a tutorial showing us how you made it within one month of receipt of the Oakshotts.
And if you don't get picked this month, don't worry, there will be another great bundle on offer soon so stay tuned.

  1. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh I'm first...lol. Lovely fabrics; that I think would look fantastic in a Giant Dahlia quilt. Thank you for this chance.

  2. I have in mind a sort of gradient star quilt. Lights in the center, spinning out to the brighter and darker pieces. One large star made of diamonds.

  3. I would love to make a lap quilt with wonky houses paperpieced pattern! So I will have a Village Quilt! With a low volume background and each house with a different solid color oakshotts fabric!

  4. I would make a circular flying geese pattern that showcases all the colors in order of the color spectrum. It would've a black background to showcase the colors.

  5. I've been wanting to make a rainbow strip quilt. Maybe if there's enough left over, I'd add a couple of star appliqués to it.

  6. I would pair these gorgeous colors with coordinating fleece or flannels, and sew up cat beds for a few of our local shelters. Happy colored beds to show off the kitties that are up for adoption, and something then familiar for the cats to take with them to their new home. I would use the Magical 3-in-1Bed pattern.

  7. I would love to have these to make a quilt inspired by the repeat patterns of welsh blankets - making a quilt in neutral colours, but replacing just one part of each repeat with a snippet of colour.

  8. If I were to win, I would give this bundle to my husband who is making his first quilt out of brightly colored "box" squares. This bundle would make great borders, or quilt back, as well as being incorporated in the squares!

  9. I've been wanting to do the lighthouse quilt from fresh lemons quilts or Tula pink's sampler quilt with solids and low volume and would use them for one of those ;)

  10. I'd make a quilt from Terry Atkinson's book "Graphic Mix". I think these Oakshott fabrics would be perfect. Thanks for the chance to win.

  11. I've been wanting to do a Cathedral Window - envisioning a black background and the Oakshott as the centers - either a cascading color shift effect across the top, or fussy setting them to create a picture much like a stained glass window/mosaic.

  12. Lynne (and Michael) these are way stunning. Whoever gets a chance to work with them will hit quite the jackpot :)

  18. These colors are stunning! I just bought a book called Antique to Heirloom Jelly Roll Quilts and two quilts I would love to make with these beauties are "Jewel in the Crown" and/or the "North Country Ways" quilts. Not sure of the background fabric as I would need to see these in person, but thinking a linen or something with texture. They are simple patch quilts that would let the fabric speak to you. Thank you for sharing!

  19. Beautiful! I would love to use this bundle to make Fresh Lemons' Kaleidoscopic Kites Free Quilt Pattern. I would use the bundle for the large squares and scraps from my stash for the small squares. I would use White Kona for the background. Thank you for the chance to play with the fabric!

  20. These fabrics are just gorgeous! I think they would look awesome in a Dresden quilt! I would pair them with prints from my stash to make a color gradient effect and use the neutral color for the centers. Maybe just a neutral color for the background to match the centers, or something more dynamic like some low volume prints or some text prints!

  23. A while ago I saw some Tibetan monks creating a mandala. I sketched out a quilt based on this: a grouping of cirlces (using drunkards path squares), enclosed by a square and overlapping diamond. I was envisioning using the same bold colors of red, orange, yellow with a dark background. This set of akshott would work wonderfully.

  24. I have a paper pieced pattern for a New York beauty star with a number of stars in it. The stars would be fabulous with all the bright bold colours in it. Thanks for the chance to win

  25. I think this FQ bundle would be stunning as giant pluses. I have been watching a few blogs where others have made these quilt tops which are stunning. I would pair it with striped shot cotton fabrics.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i would love to make a reversed star so the fabrics really shine with low volume stars and the oakshott as the background each block would be a different color.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love these gorgeous bright colours - I would make 12" churn dash blocks with them and set them on point using either black fabrics or white Lakehouse dotty fabric for the background, can't decide which would look best.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love making bags, purses and totes! I would pair these bright colors with some salvaged denims and make a collection of them!

  30. Just made my first every quilt - one of your union jack ones now been bitten by the bug and want to make a rainbow quilt and your fabrics look just perfect for that. I seem to eat, sleep, dream quilts and sewing now - no one warned me it would be addictive and I've just discovered pinterest too. Hapy new year

  31. I haven't been able to quench my love of churn dash blocks. I'd love to do a churn dash quilt (with individual churn dash blocks of variable sizes). I think I'd keep it as color saturated as possible, with some other neutral solids thrown in for backgrounds..

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would love to play with Oakshotts again and make a lap quilt with foundation pieced 32-pointed stars with Essex Linen background in flax... So striking!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would make a in rainbow color order a large dresden blade quilt....lap sized! I would have the dresden plate be a bit smaller then the whole quilt size. I'm thinking each blade would be the length of my arm. I would add one print fabric with these wonderful fabrics you have offered! I would use that print fabric for the center circle of the dresden plate. The background would be kona white!!

  34. Yes, yes! I would love to play. The next top I have in mind is a HST/LV quilt. With the Oakshott I think it would be great to mix them with low volume. I would not make a pattern, so every block contains some Oakshott HST in no particular order to let them pop out and be varied over the top. Size of the squares would be between 3'' or 5'' finished.
Have fun thinking about all the ideas popping up here!

  35. I haven't done "Don't Call Me Betsy's" star BOM that I purchased last year, since I was too sick to sew. Now I'm better, so I would love to do that with the bright Oakshots and either a grey or black background probably, to make the colors pop. I think it would be totally fabulous looking! I don't have a blog yet, but would email you a post to put on your blog. I'm so excited to have a chance to do this!

  36. I love rainbow quilts! I just really love color! If I had this bundle, then I would make a fractured rainbow lap quilt with HSTs. It would be bursting with color. Oh, I can see it on my design wall now...all those pretty HSTs eye candy with lots of movement and direction.

  41. I have a modern quilt idea using trapeziums (1/2 Hexagons) in stripes down the quilt at various lengths. Some of the trapeziums will be full solid pieces, others will be improvisational piecing using two colors, highlighting the other shapes in the trapezium. The quilt would to be ~ 60"x60" lap quilt. These colors are brilliant and would bring this design to life and offer the vibrancy I was looking for :-)

  42. Oh - I can see these in a plus quilt blended with a few Kaffe Fassett florals. The colours are gorgeous :o)

  43. The colors are fabulous! I see an improvisational quilt made with wavy strips (think fence rail with no rules, gentle curves, way more than three strips and large varying sized blocks) using all of the colors in gradation. I would continue to make blocks until all of the fabrics are used! Initially I think maybe a matchstick type quilting, I typically don't decide on quilting until the top is complete and has spoken to me :) Thank you for the chance to use these lovely fabrics!

  49. I've been wanting to make new curtains for the room our new baby will go in next year. I like the idea of a random pixilated pattern as a border fading gradually up into a white or aqua background. Good luck choosing! Some of these ideas are amazing!

  50. I can see these as a bunch of EPP flowers, using hexagons, diamonds, hexagons and diamonds etc all appliqued on a dark background with paper pieced 'vase' and a scrappy checkerboard border. Perhaps a large wall hanging or lap quilt.

  54. I would LOVE to make a single bed quilt full of folded pinwheel blocks (http://www.theclothparcel.com/folded-pinwheel-tutorial/) in all the rainbow colours you have shown in this post. I think the light hitting the 3D pinwheels would really show off the depths of colour and shimmer of the Oakshotts.

  55. I've been watching Elizabeth Hartman's cat-vent quilt along. It's cute, but I'm a dog person. I've mocked up a dog shaped silhouette and thought I'd stitch up a dog version using some of the various fabrics in my stash. The Oakshotts would make a great backbone for the pups, with my left-overs from other projects rounding out the fabrics.

  56. Ohh they look gorgeous, I want to make a pineapple quilt, with one big pineapple block from centre outwards.

  57. I see a large wallhanging, every last scrap used, nothing added. 2 darkest colours forming 3D frames, lightest cut into irregular triangles, 9 remaining colours sorted into 3 groups of 3 complimentary colours, improv pieced around the irregular triangles to look like fractured glass with a bright light shining through, set against the dark frames. Thanks for the chance to dream........

  62. These colors just vibrate! I'd be doing a rainbow half-square triangle quilt with a chevron detail in the backing. This would be for my upcoming baby - sized 54-55" square or so. The rainbow would be radiating from the center outward with grey or white contrasting each of the HST's.

  73. I'm a big fan of Rachel's Oodalolly quilt (http://www.stitchedincolor.com/2012/02/oodalolly.html). I'd love to take these Oakshotts and the curves theme to make a confused rainbow that bounces in and out of a background that highlights how saturated and gorgeous these colors are. (Maybe low volume print background? Maybe pale blue or grey to highlight the rainbow theme?) I think a throw-sized project would be a good fit for the month deadline you have in mind. This is a cool give-away! It's been fun to read through the project ideas!!

  75. For awhile I have noticed the traditional block "Churn Dash" re-appearing on Pinterest boards. I have been wanting to make a quilt using this pattern. I would use this fat quarter pack and then use different "text" fabrics as the background. Probably no border--to keep it more modern, but a scrappy binding using the leftovers from the bundle would be fun.
