#madetomeasure

Are you on Instagram?  If you're not, or you don't know what it is, it's a fun, quick and easy photo sharing app you can download onto smartphones and tablets.  I'm @lilysquilts over there.  It's even more immediate than blogs and Flickr and has become the new place to sew-a-long together.  Led mostly by the pied piper of quiltland, Katy Ginger Monkey, these sewalongs are quick, instant and can gain massive momentum from the moment they start.  To find other people making the same quilt, everyone uses the same hashtag.  So when you post a photo of your progress on the quilt you add "#scrappytripalong" for example in the comment under the photo.  To find all the scrappy trip along photos, you search #scrappytripalong and they all appear.

So yesterday I was sitting in bed contemplating the foot of snow outside the window and seeing what everyone was up to on Instagram, when Danielle posted that she'd just bought Sarah Fielke's latest book, Hand Quilted With Love.  You can find Sarah at her blog The Last Piece if you want to know more.  The beautiful medallion quilt on the front cover of the book has been haunting me for a while now so I decided to bite the bullet and order the book.  So a few of us over on Instagram are going to make this quilt together.  Do you fancy joining us?

I'm currently wondering whether I can get hold of any of these Chloe's Closet 30's Playtime fabrics to make the quilt - I think it would be lovely in this palette and these prints.  It's a new Moda line coming out later this year but I know some shops have some pre-cuts already.

And because I can't resist playing around with quilt diagrams on Touchdraw, I drew up the quilt as best I could from the drawings just because.  OK so this version is a bit bright but it gives me a chance to play around with borders and colours and patterns and helps me see how something might look if I think about changing it.  I'm not saying the quilt isn't perfect designed as it is.  I'm saying, I can't resist playing around with any quilt design just to see what happens.

So if you're going to sew along, let me know and I'll see you over on Instagram using hashtag #madetomeasure!

  1. I'm sure I'm hearing my mother saying something in the background about following people off cliffs, but I think that's because if I try taking on another project right now I'll be hurling myself off one ;o) On the other hand, you all are improving my viewing, so I'll sit back and wait for the pics to roll in :oD

  3. I'm bustingly excited about this - I'm toying between flea market fancy and my good folks stash at the moment. Decisions, decisions!

  4. Oh, I've been hovering over the "Buy" button on this book. Would love to see some of the other patterns in it before deciding, but feel in need of a quiltalong to kick start my post-baby sewing again properly so you might see me there :-)

  8. I pretty much avoid quilt alongs because I never seem to finish them - even when I'm the host! This is an adorable quilt, though. I like how the original is a little scrappy looking, with fabrics not matching exactly within each border. That will look wonderful in 30's repros. I see the line you mentioned isn't coming out until July - you might consider looking at other lines of 30's repro fabrics, as there are a TON out right now. The colors and designs are pretty similar across the different lines. At the Fat Quarter Shop, if you choose Shop by Theme and click on 1900's Reproductions you can see quite a list.

  11. I have registered with Instagram but have yet to get a grip on how it works - it might be that I never do!
I love the 30s Playtime fabric. I had it in my Ebay basket ages ago from a shop in the U.S. and should have bought it then 'cos now their international shipping has gone up by 60% so it doesn't seem quite as cheap any more.

  12. I so want to make a medallion quilt, I have been yearning to make the one from the Liberty book, which is in my Amazon wish list. Maybe it is time to order both books and then join you. I doubt I can keep up with the pace you and Katy set but I can be trailing along anyway.

  13. I've made a couple of medallion quilts and love them. I'm not sure I need to make another at the momment although this one looks lovely. I'm sure you will have fun making it.
I joined instagram yesterday and just need some followers now!! I posted a picture of a block I'd made from one of Sarah Fielkes books and she "Liked" it, I was really excited!

  14. Oh, I'm going to have to settle to be an armchair follower, but this is a beautiful quilt. I much prefer your border with the bigger corner stars, BTW.

  16. Oh, what a gorgeous quilt! I doubt I'll be joining in just yet (I'll probably be a couple of years behind you!) but I'll definitely be cheering you all on and gasping in admiration at all the beautiful quilts!

  17. Can't wait for my book to arrive (hope my posty isn't being naughty as I seem to be missing quite a bit of expected post recently!)

  18. So funny seeing everyone post about how the haven't started their Marcelles yet - I'm in the same boat! Now the dilemma, which one to start first? And I'd really like to make this (actually both) from stash - is that possible, I have no idea. But I'm thinking Liberty and low volume for Sarah's. And possibly even breaking into my (very tiny and therefore very precious) Oakshott bundle. At the moment anyway. I love your idea of drawing it up in Touchdraw to see what it would look like in your fabrics.
