Lily's Quilts Flickr Group

Many moons ago I published my first ever tutorial which was for a small union jack block which could be made from three layer cake slices.

When Nancy emailed me her picture of the block, I can't tell you how exciting it was that someone had made something from my tutorial.

Some time later, I took the brave step of starting my very own Quiltalong and, with it, my very own Flickr Group.  Starting your own Flickr group is a funny thing.  It's like saying "hey friends" and then of course you have a fear than actually no one is going to join the group and you'll be Norman No mates in a Flickr group with yourself and some tumbleweed.

And every single time someone posts a picture of something they have made from a tutorial of mine, it gives me such a good feeling.  So I want to show you a few things in that group every so often because it's wonderful to see how people take your ideas and then turn them into something so much more.  This week, a few finished quilts.  Heidi from Buttons and Butterflies put her bee group through the torture of making the tortuous ET Phone Home block and turned it into this incredible quilt.  Read more about the design process here and squint carefully to see her beautiful quilting.

Imagination

Jules made this striking and - may I say - very manly quilt for her 21 year old nephew with the Jack Attack QAL pattern.  Read more here.

And using the same pattern, Lindsay made this gorgeous quilt

sissy's jack attack quilt!

Teresa made this beautiful version which went on to be an engagement present.  Read more here.

Big Jack

And Kelli from Seriously It Needs Stitches made this amazing version for her Welsh best friend, which is a risky thing knowing that my husband is Welsh and initially refused to allow me to hang my first Union Jack quilt up in the sitting room.  We can laugh about it now...

Jumbo Jack. :) Ready to go to my Welsh Bestie for a housewarming gift. Thank you Lynne!!! Amazing quilt-along and great instructions!! blogged @ www.thatlookslikeitneedsstitches.blogspot.com

  1. Those Jack Attacks ones are amazing. All of them. And the ET phone home one is incredible. Of course I can't put any of my Lily inspired creations on your flickr site as I haven't any. But you knew that already didn't you.

  6. Oh, everyone has done such a lovely job on their quilts! Love the ET Phone Home quilt ~ the colors and quilting are wonderful. And the Jack Attacks are great too ~ I've been wanting to make one for my son and he only likes black, grey and white ~ thanks for the inspiration!

  9. A timely post as I am just gathering my 2 layer cakes and copy of the Daily Mail together to embark on your Union Jack throw which features on the Moda Bake Shop. I must confess, at first I didn't realise you had made 'shabby chic fabric' by layering the squares over newspaper and sort of sewing over them so I'm feeling a bit wobbly about it now although your photos look great so I'm sure I should forge ahead. These Jack Attack ones also look good. Is there a link for the small Union Jack block as I'd love to knock a few of those out too - when I get a minute!

    1. Since you are a no reply comment blogger, so I cannot reply to your comment but the small union jack has gone into a book called 100 Modern Blocks. But there is a medium sized union jack called Double Fat Jack on this blog and a UK pillow sized Union Jack in the London retreat issue of Fat Quarterly - let me know if you need any more info!

  11. What a surprise! Unquestionably, I've created more quilts and blocks using your tutorials, than from using any other one source. Can you tell that I'm a fan? Also, I plan to make more, especially one using your ET Phone Home tutorial. You're right, Heidi's quilt is incredible.

I understand firsthand how rewarding it is to see others' creations based on your tutorials. It's like the tutorials are your babies and the quilts made from them are your grandbabies. You are the proud grandma.

Several years ago, I was the chairperson of my quilt guild's Optional Block Committee, which required me to prepare tutorials for each month's optional block. It felt so good to see my guild members' blocks made from my tutorials--especially those that were for my original block designs.

  18. Wow, I love all of the quilts you showed, esp. the ET Phone Home one. Amazing. Thanks for showing my Jack quilt.. (I wish I hadn't photographed it upside down!) ..it wasn't so risky for the Welsh bestie, as I had seen her eyeing up some Union Jack throw pillows b/c they remind her of home. She almost cried (in a good way-ha) when I gave it to her. Thanks again for the fab quilt-along.. btw, I'm totally IN LOVE with Lyndsay's bright, colorful version. *swoon*
