Sew it with Aurifil

Those of you who read this blog will know that I sew with Aurifil.  I piece with 50wt and quilt with 50wt, 40wt and 28wt.  If I was an embroiderer or hand quilter, I would quilt with 12 wt.

And now here's your chance to sew with Aurifil.  Each month Aurifil will be offering one of you the chance to try out one of their 12 spool thread sets and let us know how you get on.  This month the set we are offering is the Bari J Slendour 1920 collection created to complement her beautiful Slendour 1920 fabric collection for Art Gallery Fabrics.

The collection contains twelve 12wt spools.  12wt is hand quilting or embroidery weight thread but it can run through the machine if you pick a bigger needle.

To be in with a chance of playing with these beautiful threads, here's what you need to do:
  • Leave a comment letting me know what you would make using the Splendour 1920 Aurifil Designer Collection.
  • You can make something big, small, quilted, not quilted, useful, decorative.  It's up to you.
  • After a few days, we will pick our favourite project suggestion and that person will be sent the thread collection.
  • All we ask of you is that you write a guest post for this blog containing photos of the finished item and a tutorial showing us how you made it, ideally within one month of receipt of the threads.
And if you don't get picked this month, don't worry, there will be another Designer Collection on offer next month so stay tuned.

  1. I think I would make drawstring bags, with some decorative stitching on them, and totes...

  2. I would make a lily flower wall hanging where it was made up of thread painted 4" squares (with the aurifil) of lilies that are individually bound - then hung together using the 12 wt between them - maybe adding some beads between too!

http://pinterest.com/auntiepami/my-modern-crazy-quilt/ so I'm ready. I'm not the best embroiderer (is that a word?), but I'm willing to give it a shot. Oh, well, off to shop for fabrics...

  38. I am into making small wall quilts using threadplay and fabrics. These colors would make a beautiful Autumn scene. I never really know what size it will be till I get into my fabrics.

  39. What perfect timing. I fell in love with Splendor 1920 a few days ago and decided I'd finally found the right fabric to make my long desired Swoon quilt. I love the look of chunky quilting and have been waiting for a chance to try the Aurifil 12 wt in my machine. I'm a relatively quilter who discovered the magic of Aurifil 50wt this Fall. I'm already on my five large spool, since October. I don't think I will ever piece with anything else again and since I like dense quilting too, the 50 wt is perfect for achieving the texture I desire without being too heavy.

I would really, really love the chance to work with this collection. Thanks for the consideration!

  40. I would love to try this beautifull threads for a project embroidery. I would create a new project with traditional embroidery, stumpwork and cutwork. This color are perfect for it. (sorry, i'm french and my english is not really good)

  41. I would use them to hand quilt a re-purposed vintage quilt top that appears to be made from feedsacks that has beautiful starflower patch. It's a bit faded, but is a great base for the quilt I'm making for my High School friend's wedding present. It's going to be my first piece by piece quilt project, but is the perfect wedding present for her: she has her master's in history, used to work at the historic Davies Manor Plantation and C.H. Nash Museum at Chuchalissa, and is now a manager at Memphis's historic A. Schwab department store. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Schwab's

These colors will add vibrancy and fun to the history of this patched quilt while incorporating my friend's education and personal history into it!

  56. Oh I love Aurifil thread! Have been using 50wt for a long time now, love quilting and sewing with it. Another thing I really love is color-gradation fabrics (they call the OMBRE fabrics too). SO - as soon as I saw your post a series of images came to my head: I would make a series of small pieces with different usage of color gradation fabrics as a background and then stitching flowers and birds on them with this lovely 12wt Aurifil in these amazing colors! These small pieces can be small wall hangings, pillows, parts of bigger composition, decorative piece of a bag, apron....so many ideas.... oh - a small piece every month and a tutorial to go with it!! Now I am inspired! :)

These threads would allow me to decorate and quilt them by hand, which I love doing!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I would use these threads on an art quilt that I have in mind with an abstract floral design. The threads would highlight the inside parts of flower beautifully, and the color tones of this 1920's collection are a perfect match!

  76. Some time ago I purchased fabric to make two memory quilt wall hangings for a childhood friend and myself. The fabrics include popsicles that remind us of the ice cream truck that came through our neighborhood; children with hula-hoops that are reminiscent of the pix of us as little girls trying to keep the hula-hoops up; and tea cups & tea pots reminiscent of our countless tea parties and of our grown-up sharing of tea on visits. This thread would be wonderful for tread-painting memories and quilting around the fabric prints. I LOVE Aurifil and use it for all of my piecing and most of my FMQ.

I don't have them pieced yet, but have computer sketches for some. One is an old farm house, similar to the one my grandparents lived in. One is a window view. The blues & greens & neutrals will be perfect.

  103. I just signed up for Rachel's Handstitching class, where we make those modern medallion quilts. One of the focal fabrics I've been leaning towards would suit this collection beautifully. ( http://www.intrepidthread.com/shop/Just-Arrived/p/Luxe-in-Bloom--Extravagarden-in-Bold-sku-LIB-8205-Extravagarden-Bold.htm ) and it'd be wonderful to make the modern medallion quilt with it. My concern would be the timing...the class starts soon but runs for 9 weeks, which is well outside the one month threshold. However, as it's created in rounds, it'd easily be possible to show progress shots as it's completed. :)

  114. For some time I've wanted to make a crazy quilt piece but with a modern flare. Maybe use some of the modern designer velveteens and make the "crazy part" slightly more organized. Crazy ... but not too. As much as I'd like to make a whole quilt, I think this would likely be a piano runner/scarf (I imagine it featuring beautifully against a black piano) or a wall hanging. And these threads would featured dazzlingly in fancy combo stitching along the seam lines and with some featured embroidered here and there ... with a modern motif spin on the traditional type motifs. I'd probably include a few beads, too. Ooooo ... I can just picture it! Imagine fly, cretins, lazy daisies, meanders, couching, blanket stitches, chains ... so many to choose from! I've only done a little (one quilt square's worth) of this kind of stitching several years ago but the memory lingers and I would love to do more. And I'll bet Aurifil 12 would be great for such a project. Don't you think? Oh, please, oh please, oh please ...

I have asked my daughter to choose a quilt which she will email to me as soon as I've finished my (very late) Christmas quilt - just the binding to go. I'll then give myself 6 weeks to make a quilt. I would love to be able to use the Aurifil to machine quilt and hand embellish the quilt. I'm hoping it will be a great practice piece for the real thing, and I'll be able to continue using the Aurifil thread on the CW quilt.

  129. I would use these bright colors to make the pillows for my daughter's Indonesian outdoor day bed. It's dark wood, with carving, and needs something bright like these colors.

  130. I just signed up for a hand embroidery class. My sweet cousin loved sunflowers. I would make a few of those in her memory.

  131. I would love to try them! I would make a mini quilt very densely quilted. I was inspired by a photo of interior decorating in a magazine and want to interpret the colors and shapes into a new modern, clean lined piece.

  132. I think these would be perfect to get me started on handquilting. I'd love to make one scrappy trip around the world block (because I just know I can't attempt a whole quilt) and make a mini quilt with handquilting and embroidery details.

  133. I would put these threads to use making a hand-quilted cushion cover with embroidered three-dimensional fabric flowers. Think clusters of colorful fabric blooms embellished with plenty of french knots and decorative stitches. Thanks for the chance!

  134. I would use them for hand embroidery...I have a family rules stitchery that I would love to make and these colours are beautiful!

  135. I would use them for hand quilting my finished top 'vignette in stitches' and I would like to try some stitcheries with it. Beutiful colours. lia.vandenbrand@live.nl

  136. I would like to realize a hand making painting and to complete it with the embroidery using Aurifil Threads. Winning this give away would be the right ocasion to realize the work: Thanks for the opportunity !

  137. I find that the Aurifil is the best thread for free motion quilting on my Janome. I'd make quilted placemats with free form feathers!

  138. I am just getting back into quilting and have never used Aurifil Threads. I currently have at least 2 quilt tops I could use this thread on with 2 more in the works. I would love a chance to give this thread a try.

  139. I have some oriental fabric that matches these thread colors. I think I would make a fan quilt and decorate the blades of the fans with these threads. Hmmm. So many quilts, so little time.

  140. Me gustaría una funda para mi agenda de esta año. Con tela gris claro y pequeños cuadrados a juego con los hilos que después de usarán para acolchar y...naturalmente serán Aurifil.

  141. I would buy the Grandeur Bloom Panel and use the thread for what it was made for after that I would make a small quilt to hang in my new grand daughters bedroom the fabric is lovely and so is the thread! Thank you. I would love to make something to show off Aurifil threads. Thank you! I hope you pick my project it would be so exciting!

  142. I love these colors and would love to give them a try on a whole cloth quilt--just for the quilting.

  143. I have a hand-dyed rainbow quilt to sew up and would like to hand quilt with some great colors. This thread pack would be perfect.

  144. I've changed my plan - I'm writing up a tutorial for a blog hop at the end of January on how to do Sashiko - I think these would be perfect to do a modern sashiko sampler of some kind (probably wall hanging size given the time constraints). The colours would be beautiful, and would really help to give it a modern twist and move it away from the more traditional white on indigo of Japanese sashiko.

  145. Those beautiful colors would be perfect for the How Does Your Garden Grow by Crabapple Hill.

  146. I would design an embroidery project to go with the threads to be placed in a wallhanging or small quilt.

  147. I would use this beautiful thread to finish my hand-piece Charmed for Sure quilt by hand quilting it.

  148. Ooh, I'd love to try these. I think I would either use them to hand sew round some hexes or on a plain coloured fabric so that the threads would glow.

  149. I have a "Fridge Pickers wear Big Knickers" embroidery design that I'd love to stitch with these! The perfect thing to keep me on track for my New Year's resolution ;)

  150. I just ordered my first fabric from this collection to redo my entire living room decor. The large scale prints are too beautiful to cut to pieces so I plan to make several quilted throw pillows and echo the design with some decorative quilting.

  151. Wow I love those colours. I think I would make a quilt, wave upon waves in those colours to reflect 'from the shoreline to the sea, and beyond'. Then I would quilt each wave in the corresponding colour. I think I need to make this quilt regardless, now I have thought of it!

  152. I saw a 'designer' pillow made with something like a hessian sack and some beautiful thread just running stitched through. I'd like to try something like that with this - a plain, rough fabric (not a sack!) to really make the thread sing!

  153. I have a question about using Aurifil. I've purchased two of the 12-spool sets over the past year. The 40-wt pack works very well in my machine. The 50-wt shreds & breaks after sewing just a very short distance. My assumption would be to tighten the tension with that really thin thread, but I've also loosened it - all to no avail. Do you change your needle size (eye) with the smaller thread, too? If I can't use it for top-thread, I may have just purchased a lifetime's worth of bobbin thread...

    :)
