Sew it with Aurifil

Those of you who read this blog will know that I sew with Aurifil.  I piece with 50wt and quilt with 50wt, 40wt and 28wt.  If I was an embroiderer or hand quilter, I would quilt with 12 wt.

And now here's your chance to sew with Aurifil.  Each month for the next three months, Aurifil will be offering one of you the chance to try out one of their 12 spool thread sets and let us know how you get on.  This month the set we are offering is the 12 x 12wt spool Prism collection created by Michele Scott for Aurifil.  12wt is hand quilting or embroidery weight thread but it can run through the machine if you pick a bigger needle.
To be in with a chance of playing with these beautiful threads, here's what you need to do:
  • Leave a comment letting me know what you would make using the Prism Aurifil Designer Collection.
  • You can make something big, small, quilted, not quilted, useful, decorative.  It's up to you.
  • After a few days, we will pick our favourite project suggestion and that person will be sent the thread collection.
  • All we ask of you is that you write a guest post for this blog containing photos of the finished item and a tutorial showing us how you made it, ideally within one month of receipt of the threads.
And if you don't get picked this month, don't worry, there will be another Designer Collection on offer next month so stay tuned.

  1. This would look so pretty with a rainbow rail fence quilt accented with the various threads.

  2. Oh well now you're talking! I can see a whole cloth quilt, dark fabric, quilted in just those threads!

  3. Wow Trudi, that was exactly my first though, but you pipped me to the post there, I would love to see it if you get the chance to play with them, i bet it would be fantastic! So, I'll have to give a second choice idea for me, what about a dresden plate cushion made in some kind of low volume, or texty fabric with the petals embroidered with those beautiful threads to really show them off. Ange : )

  4. I have really been wanting to try Aurifil, and just clicked that it is stocked at Pink Castle fabrics. Will definitely be adding a spool to my next fabric order. This challenge really requires the thinking cap for me - I am not a hand-quilter at all. I am thinking of a mini spools quilt, with the "thread" part of each spool in white fabric, but then with quite heavy quilting in a different colour of thread for each to show off the thread. I would do the quilting by machine - maybe different FMQ patterns, maybe using some of the fancy embroidery type stitches on my (mum's) machine.

  5. I immediately thought of a hand quilted piece that I had sewn a couple fo years ago and have actually been planning another. I was using up some fabrics to make an everyday quilt with a black backing and decided to use up some of the odds and ends of threads and embroidery floss that I had in my other stash (!). Well I was not too impressed with the "pieced front" and that's okay, but the back where all the stitching showed was another story altogether! I really loved it and at the time that I was stitching it some meaning was given to it. You can see it here dyeingforyou-kathleen.blogspot.com/2011/03/stitched-striations-new-name.html#links. Hopefully this link works, this is the first time that I have "linked". Thanks for the opportunity to win these threads!

  7. I would really love to sew with Aurifil! I could use it everywhere cause I love sewing and creating using all the techniques. What I would love is to try them with a bobbin lace creation that I could use to refashion or to create a new fabric creation with it. Let the chance speak ;)

  9. I've always heard of, but have never used, Aurifil. My LQS doesn't carry it. :( As you mentioned embroidery, I would embroidery with it, giving more details and depth to the people and scenery b/c of the variegated color. It could be very dramatic. I mean, can't you see the rays in the sun moving and the tide of the water rolling along already?!

  10. I just received some Sizzix flower dies for raw edge applique and I would use this Aurifil to do some amazing thread painting on them. Ooh I'm so excited - even if I don't win I may have to buy some on my own and make this project!

  11. I am thinking of using the thread through my machine, I have tried this before with jean stitch thread, and you just have to go slow and carefully. I think this would make for some fabulous quilting. I would take a low value top, made with simple patches, and use the thread to showcase a colorful design on top of this. So the top will be the background and the thicker threads of quilting will really pop out. I can't tell you what the design will be at this time, but I have made a low value top using grays, and I plan to make another using neutrals (prints and solids).
I'm not sure how much detail you want for the contest -
    Thanks for the opportunity!

I have a bento box quilt top in solid and patterned fabrics that I started when I got back into quilting 7 years ago - so it has original Flea Market Fancy in it and other 'vintage' fabrics, lol. I am now ready to quilt it and I would love to hand quilt it with these yummy threads, which would suit its scrappy colour palette perfectly!

  15. I have just purchased Madame Samm's coin purse instructions and three of the handles. I would use the Aurofil thread to sew the handles onto the body of these coin purses. Hope I win. Love the threads. Thanks for the chance!!!

  23. I quilt and piece exclusively with Aurifil. The only time I don't use aurifil is when I do garment sewing/serger. I'd use Aurfil prism on my next self challenge I want to tackle - adult wearable and not a jacket. Women's special occasion dress. I've recently completed a little girl dress, made with recycled fabrics. It's about time quilted wearables get modern, stylish, and mainstream.

  24. I really like this collection. I have several embroidery designs that are perfect for the varigated threads. Just wish the 12 wt could come on smaller spools. It would be wonderful for the Aurifil embroidery blog hops. I do sew almost exclusively with the 50 wt. I have not used the 40 wt to quilt yet.

  35. If it's ok that I'm across the ocean, I'd like to play along. :) I collect vintage sheets and love to incorporate them into projects! I would like to make a low volume vintage sheet mini quilt and have the "focal point" (off to the side- not centered) be a design created by these threads/colors- hand embroidered/quilted, of course. I am thinking an original, graduated step design of some form for the pattern. I'd love to try out this weight!

I am planning on quilting it using 16 different colors of thread! The quilting will radiate out from each wedge. This prism of thread would be PERFECT to add some hand stitching to the finished wall hanging!

  58. I simply wanted to say that Aurifil, j'adore!! Always I piece with 50wt, and usually quilt, both machine and hand, with that weight, and sometimes with 40wt. I went a bit mad a couple weeks ago and bought the Aurifil colour card so I could choose accurately! That selection looks gorgeous, but I have *no* idea how I would showcase it. Everyone above me has great ideas, so I wish you luck choosing! I look forward to the lucky winner's guest post. :-)

  69. What beautiful threads Aurafil makes! If I were to win these threads, I would be interested to see if it is thick enough to do some Punchneedle. I love to do fins shapes with smaller thread when punching. These colors would make a beautiful bouquet or perhaps a mini quilt design. If they are too fine for Punchneedle, I would love to try them with wool appliqué. Many of my wool projects are these brighter colors and I use any thread I have on hand that matches the wool to sew it on. These varigated colors would look lovely on wool it think! 77. A whole cloth quilt made exciting from the use of various thread highlights between the standard quilting weight sewing.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I would make a thread scarf, with bits of colorful batik fabrics. Using a wash away stabilizer, I sandwich the bits of fabric and perhaps lace or ribbons or other fibers, and create a new fabric by stitching with the aurifil thread in top and bobbin to create the warp and weft threads that make up the to be created fabric. This 12wt would make a nice airy fabric, and I am imagining the consistency of the fringe that can be made by sewing machine with this aurfil 12wt thread.

The big questions: long or short fringe? narrow or wide scarf? short or fashionably long? and how to incorporate the colors - as a blend, gradations, or some random visual patchwork?

I look forward to seeing the finished project by the lucky winner.

  82. I have been mulling this over for the past day and I have two ideas for using this type of thread:

    1. I have blocks from a tree & house quilt from Stash Bee that I would like to make primarily as a hanging in my daughters' room. I can send you a link to some of the blocks, but it is quite whimsical and a lot of the blocks already have some fun embellishment. I'd like to put this quilt together and hand quilt it. I've only ever hand quilted something once, so it would be a wonderful learning experience for me. I already have embroidery needles and a hoop, so the thread would be all I'd need:) This is a link to the quilt I used as inspiration for my bee mates (with permission from the creator):
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/busybeequilts/6608881185/in/photostream
I have some photos on my flickr stream of some of the blocks together if you'd like to get an idea of what it will look like, but very similar to this one.

    2. My other idea is to make a rectangular pillow from this embroidery design by The Sometimes Crafter:
    http://www.thesometimescrafter.com/free-tutorials/TSC_HappyLittleHouses.pdf
I've never done embroidery before, either, but I contacted Christine and she gave me some pointers for doing it. It needs to be enlarged and I'm thinking the pillow will be somewhere around 20 inches in length.

Those are my ideas! Hope you pick me:)
    Jamie

  97. Moda's Simply Color collection would be perfect for this Prism Collection. I first used Aurifil thread because I bought it at a quilt shop that was going out of business. It was 12 wt. I didn't know any better, and it was a good thing I was machine quilting it on a flannel quilt. The result was exceptional, but when I had to track down more thread to match, I had a difficult time, but finally found someone online who carried it. Great stuff!

  98. After rereading my previous post, it doesn't say what I'd make. I would use Moda's Simply Color collection and the Prism threads to create a modern lap quilt. Pattern? Maybe the Sea Glass Mosaic that was featured in this issue of Quilt Magazine. It allows for a lot of open space to really highlight the quilting and those exceptional colors!
