How big is your Christmas stocking?

There are two types of Christmas stocking.  The very small decorative type you hang from the mantlepiece which any child would be disappointed to see at the end of their bed on Christmas morning since it would just about have enough room for one satsuma and a 50p piece.  Then there's the second type which is so big you could almost use it as a sleeping bag.

Now that's what I'm talking about.  That's a ten gallon Christmas stocking.  The one above is made from Dear Mr Claus by Cosmo Cricket for Moda and the one below is made from Countdown to Christmas by Sweetwater for Moda.

My parents are not going to thank me for this one.  They wanted stockings for my neice and nephew who are coming to stay for Christmas.  Now they're going to have to spend serious money in Poundland to fill those stockings.  When Julie from Sewing World asked me for a Christmas Stocking, I asked her permission to make one that you could fit a serious stash of presents into.  Otherwise what's it all about really?

And the magazine with the Super Sized Stocking came out this week.  Roll on Christmas!

  4. I'm with you - you do need a big-enough stocking - I made mine last year but had to strike a balance between being too large that I set fire to it (i do like it hanging by the hearth) or just the right size to still look good next to the fireplace - after all beautiful, shiny things often come in small packages!! This year I have one to make for my new baby (due 28th dec) just in case she puts in an early appearance x

  8. When me and my brother were little we didn't have stockings...we had pillowcases instead ;o) I love this design (your stocking, not pillowcases) and think that children (and adults!) up and down the country will be hoping Father Christmas will be filling one of these on Christmas Eve!

  11. hehe, you are so funny :) congrats on being in the magazine, but really, my Christmas to-do-list is long enough without you churning out fabulousness like this that just begs to be added on ;)

  12. Awesome! I like knit stockings the best....they stretch. My oldest brother always told us that he was going to use a pair of paintyhose for his.

Your folks could always put some stuffed toys in the toes....it would fill it up a bit quickly.

  13. LOL! Now that's a proper stocking. I've just made one in the shape of a giant wellie boot to teach at my adult/kids Christmas workshop! I'm guessing the kids won't be wanting teeny stockings! Jxo

  14. It's a stocking for big foot!! What fun! I love it.

  15. I made my kids giant stockings like those when they were little. More money went into stuffing the stockings than it did gifts under the tree. LOL. After all most gifts that would have gone under the tree fit in the stockings:)
