Thread investment

Many moons ago, I told you I was trying out Aurifil thread, having heard so much about it around the internet. Well I have tried it and here is a quick up date of how I use it, what I think of it and what my recommended purchases are.  I now use Aurifil 50wt (orange spool) for all my piecing, both hand and machine and it is faultless and in a different league to all other threads I have ever used throughout my 30 something sewing years.  It has almost no lint and almost never tangles.  It is strong but fine and smooth.  If I were someone who did a lot of applique, I would invest in an ultimate box of 48 spools of 50wt but I am not.  So my investment is in the Basic Designer Collection of twelve 50wt neutral threads (see pic below).

For machine quilting, I use 40wt (green spool).  I like that it shows more clearly on the quilted surface but that it is light enough to fly through my machine at the speed I FMQ.  And so my other recommended investment is the Ultimate Collection of 48 colours in 40wt (see pic above).  For a more defined quilted look, I would recommend 28wt (grey spool) or even 12wt (red spool, comes in cotton or wool).  I am not a hand quilter, cross-stitcher or embroiderer but, if you are, Aurifil 12wt is worth trying.

Comments

  1. I'm a quilter and have been using the Aurafil threads for about a year. I'm hooked! The quality is far superior to anything else I use in my machine or when sewing by hand. I'm so glad you did the critique, and hope others try it out to see if they agree with us!
    Regards,
    Donna

  3. Aurifil threads are wonderful threads and I've recently used some of the wool thread for punchneedle and it is lovely.

  4. Thanks for all the advice, I have a little sample pack with 4 different weights to try out, given to me by very charming Italian man at NEC on Monday. Shame you couldn't make it - loads of good stuff, I had a bit of a ribbons and buttons orgy!

  5. Couldn't agree more about the 50wt Aurifil ... it is like silk and butter (?) and I love using it for handsewing and epp as well as machine piecing.

I love the 12wt for really banging large surface applique (I used it w/ a big blanket stitch on my linen lapkins)

  6. Oh...I am working on a little pouch and you just reminded me to use my black Aurifil 12 wt... thanks for that...I'm gettin old and can use all the reminders I can get...lol

I LOVE Aurifil too... it's all I buy...

  7. I was wondering where you might be able to buy this thread online in the collection format? According to the Aurifil website - I would have to drive an hour and a half to get to a store to buy it in person... does anyone have a preferable online shopping location to get this thread at the best price? Thanks!!!

  8. I love Aurifil! I've been using it for 4 or 5 years. Nothing else compares!

  9. Love it, but you knew that already :)

  10. Thanks for telling me about the orange spool part, and the thread weights, I always get so confused over that stuff. I'm in the process of switching over to Aurifil myself, using up the Gutermann spools I've got and starting to stock up on Aurifil. I'm definitely a big fan of theirs :)

  11. I recently tried Aurifil 50 wt for piecing and do love it. But my local stores don't carry the other weights, so I'm thinking about placing an order for the heavier stuff. I use Robinson Anton for quilting right now, and while it's always worked great, it does put out a lot of lint.

  12. I've been using it since you sent me a sample pack and it is just fabulous!! I really want to justify buying the ultimate collection but I've only seen it for sale in USA and can't really justify the second mortgage for postage!

  13. I have never tried Aurifil thread, but I hate handpiecing and have the thread fray and knot. I thought I'd try it, but it's so expensive. After doing some research I discovered the company's headquarters are in Milan. My husband and I are travelling to Italy soon and one of our stops is going to be Milan. I'm hoping to do some serious shopping for thread while I am there. Thanks for the post and the heads up! Happy Sewing!

  14. If anyone in Canada has found a good online source for Aurafil, I would love to know it! It sounds sooo wonderful, and I don't know how to get my hands on it. :(

  15. I use aurifil too and I am Canadaian and just phone up Carola at Carola's threads. Google it. I had my thread the very NEXT day!!!! wahoo!

  16. I love Aurafil myself. I found a great Canadian Supplier and it's $5/spool. They are clearing them out so they don't have a huge selection, but there is still selection. I don't use anything else!

  17. Thanks for this. Do you have a UK supplier who does the full range?

  18. Thanks for the review. I recently purchased my first spools of Aurifil and love them too. One of my favorite things is that I can fit more thread on my bobbin with Aurifil than the other brand I was using. So nice not to have to stop to refill bobbins as often.

  19. I love me some Aurifil. I think I have the same supplier as Heather - locally based and some great prices. I use a dark brown 28 wt to do that scribbly-stitching-appliqué thing and it works a treat.

  20. I love my 28 weight and use it for topstitching, FMQ, FM embroidery and applique!

    Thanks Lynne!

  21. Whoa. I'm having thread envy. I'm so glad you posted about this, though, because it's really good to know!

  22. What you say is so, so true, I'm on the hunt now for someone in the UK for threads for the 'Pinks' quilt

  23. I have a very limited supply of Aurifil and certainly love it, so I only use it for "special" projects. Depending on where you live here in Canada, availability is a problem for us.

  24. I can't believe I still haven't tried my samples of it out yet, maybe I need to sit them right by my machine to remind me! I think it's because the 50wt I have is green, and I really don't use green, must find a green project...

  25. In Canada you could try also with http://bytownethreads.com/

  26. I love Aurifil so much that I threw away all my other thread!!!

  27. i won a big batch of aurifil thread ... i shared some with my sis, and have since used this thread for everything and like it so much, i add a few spools to most of my orders so i can build up a stash.

  28. Thank you for the review! I see (through a web search) that my local quilt shop does carry Aurifil. I'll be buying some next time I'm there. Hope they have sample packs.

  31. I have used Aurifil threads for awhile now and in love with them! My Bernina 830 sews beautifully with it. If you haven't tried it check the Aurifil website for a sewing center near you that carries Aurifil threads.

  32. This is a good on line site for aurifil.

  33. I've just used Aurifil for the first time on an Aplique hanging and loved it....but so expensive in OZ so am grateful for comments like Patty has given... Thankyou

  34. I hand quilt - hardly any of my quilts are machine quilted - and use embroidery floss and pearl cotton size 8. I've yet to try Aurifil as, believe it or not, it is incredibly hard to find in France and bludy expensive too!

  37. I love the orange and green spools - not tried the others yet! I wish there was a shop nearby that stocked it...

  38. I recently tried some hand applique with the Connecting threads cottons....ack! So I gave my Aurifil (very limited at the time selection)a try....I am in love. So I went in & stocked up when a local quilt store shut down. Don't have all of the colors but do have a decent selection. I'll never use anything else. I'll use up the other for hand basting.

  39. I haven't tried these threads at all, but I've been seeing them mentioned online a bit lately as well. So I'm off to buy a few! I mean a set. LOL

  40. Yup I agree with everything you said. I quilted a child's quilt with 12 wt and just loved the sheen it brought to the quilt. I am looking forward to trying it for some hand work. I love the 40 wt also for quilting and the 50 for piecing and hand applique and sewing down binding.
