Farmer's Wife QAL 25 blocks done, 86 to go

For anyone who hasn't noticed, half of the modern bloggers out there seem to be jumping on the Farmer's Wife QAL bandwagon and I'm no exception. I'm up to 25 blocks now so thought I'd take a step back and ask you a couple of questions. At this point in the quilt, what do I need more or less of?What ideas might you have for sashing and cornerstones?

Comments

  1. Looks amazing...and I really love your blog look! =)

  2. Your new look blog is fun! Loving the blocks but they seem to be getting heavy on the red/white, is that what you're aiming for? Personally I would want to be adding more of the lovely green/turquoise/blues. Just my humble opinion :)

  3. I'm with Lis all the way - blog and blocks !

  4. They look great, I actually love how they look like they are set into White squares in your pictures, how have you done that? The colours look great, I think a couple more that contain the darker pink and orange would look great as that block seems to stand out as slightly different at the moment.

  5. You are heavy on the red & black but low on the orange & pink and I don't see any yellows at all. I would think for sashing and cornerstones I would go with a black. Will the mosaic maker allow you to add that in there? I think it might? give that a go and see what you think. Or send me the pictures files and I will play with them on my pc with sashing colors for you.

  6. These look great, can't believe how many you have done so far. Looking at it I see colours in this order: red, black, white, turquoise. The oranges, pinks and greens look a little lonely!

  7. They look great Lynne! I agree that more pink, orange and green would look good. In fact I think you should try making a blue and pink block next, then a blue and orange one. I'm loving those 2 combinations for these blocks!

  8. Looks great, I think you need more blues/turqoise in there to balance out the red and black.

  9. Yes, beautiful blocks but some zesty citrus needed methinks - yellow orange green pink - basically a pack of opal fruits and you'll be spot on (mind you, you have got 86 to go!)

Personally, I don't think I would sash at all ... if they're all on white I think they'd look fabtastic just patched.

  10. This is coming on fantastical. The colours all work very well together helped by the binding element of white (at least that is what I think). I am getting my book next week and am still agonizing which fabrics I should do the quilt with. Not sure if I should start it anyhow as I have so many other things on.

  11. I think it could use more green, orange and purple, in my humble opinion. Love that first block of the interlocking squares!

  12. Wow, 25??? You're making my overachiever feathers stand up and take notice! I think your blocks look fantastic, but like some others have mentioned, you're a bit heavy with the warm colors. Add more cool colors - greens and blues and purples - to balance this out. As for cornerstones and sashing? I think you probably can't decide that until you finish the blocks!

  13. Lynne, They are looking great and I love the fresh modern fabrics you're using. I would add more turquoises and blues/greens. Ros

  14. I think more greens. And maybe at least 1 more block that has black as a background...such as the two on the top row. Oh...also some purple and yellow...if you've got them.

  15. WOW you are amazing. I am in awe of all this. Great work.

  16. What an awesome job! I love what you've done so far. Can't wait to see the rest. I zoomed in and close up these blocks look even more stunning - each one is so intricate and well balanced, you've made great choices. I think you have a terrific eye for colour and you are doing just fine - trust your instincts.

  17. Hi Lynne...I think your blocks so far look great.I don't think I would change a thing...I did join the group on Flicker; but then got a couple of commissioned quilts to make; so I am going to step back and maybe another time..I need to get the book; and that is going to set me back even more in time...waiting for it to get here..and catching up..but what I've seen; from everyone looks wonderful...nice jobs; all of you...

  18. #4 to the right on the bottom row looks like a bird with glasses on. *S*

I just finished a pretty large quilt that used white sashings with dark gray cornerstones and it set off the scrappy blocks perfectly. Let me know if you want to see a pic.

  19. These are amazing Lynne! I don't know how everyone pulls together all these fabrics to make such wonderful blocks! I see lots of red in the blocks so maybe adding in more of the other colours unless your going for a red quilt. My absolute favourite block is the 3rd one down on the right hand side.

  20. Wow... you are so fast with these blocks! They look fantastic.

  21. They're beautiful! Because you're photographing them on point, it looks like there's a lot of white space around the quilts. The way the blocks are set in the original quilt doesn't have this - they're separately only by an inch or so of sashing. To get an idea of how they will look with just the sashing and cornerstones, lay out a piece of white fabric and place the blocks on it with an inch between them. You could even cut a few cornerstone squares to see how it will look. Try it with different sashing fabrics - solids, I think. Personally, I think you've gone with a strong white component so white would be a good unifying and resting fabric for the sashing. Lemon yellow would also be interesting since you aren't using a lot of it in your blocks. Aqua or black would both be interesting cornerstones, but you have a lot of leeway there since the pieces are so small.

You could also change up the setting if you prefer. Alternating the blocks with white squares (no sashing) or using a variety of very light - almost white - fabrics as setting triangles around each block would give you a look similar to your mosaic. It would result in a larger quilt, but not unmanageable.

Because I am an absolute freak I just spent an hour playing with setting options and such in EQ7. If you're interested in seeing them, send me an email.

  22. This looks great! I love how you set them on point with the white triangles. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

  23. Your blocks all look so beautiful!! I can't believe how fast you are getting them finished! I agree with Angela about loving them set on point...very nice!

  24. Your blocks are lovely! I have fallen in love with this book and am just starting the blocks as well. I am going scrappy but with contemporary colors.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Do you want all of the colors to be balanced? Maybe you want the quilt to be heavy on reds with other colors as accents. I happen to really like red :). I think is is going great!

  26. What happened to the two blocks a week? - I guess you just couldn't stop Lynne! Excellent work. Suggest a bit more pink, green and orange!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I want to know if you're are getting old fast? If we make two blocks a week and you have made 25 blocks that means you have aged 3 months in 3 weeks! I have to have something to say besides WOW! Your blocks are beautiful.

  28. Your blocks look great, especially the black. I vote that you add more black components to your blocks. :)

  29. Were you an over achiever in school or just in the quilt world??? These look amazing, I can't believe how many you've done. As for advice....you're doing great..just keep going.

  30. Don't they look abulous altoghether like that! I'm keen to get started on mine :)

  31. Looking really good Lynne - yes definitely more of the green, turquoise, blue and remember some of the buttery yellow

    ReplyDelete
  32. These are just lovely. I'd incorporate some more green and orange...

    ReplyDelete
  33. I bet you got all your homework handed in on time at school, too. Aren't you, like, 8 weeks ahead of schedule??!? It's actually a good thing because it means I won't have to wait an entire year to see your amazing quilt come together. Well done, Skinny Linny!

  34. Goodness!! You are on a roll! I need to get onto blocks 5 & 6.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Fabulous progress, Lynne. Definitely need more blue and green to balance out the red. LOVE how it's coming along.

    ReplyDelete
  36. And to think I have nit even started yet...
Beware, I'm coming to you for tips on block construction. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  37. really pretty blocks! i've only got 2.5 blocks done so I CANNOT really talk, but if you asked me, I'd say you need more pink, green, and orange :-)

  38. How in the world do you have 25 done? I haven't even gotten around to ordering the book yet!!! katrina_hertzer2000(at)yahoo(dot)com

  39. Love your blog's style. {note to self:I need to resurrect mine once I have my next surgery.} I'm really so glad that I found your little corner of the Internet!! Your blocks look so great. I agree with the color comments given - red is front & center, turquoise is gorgeous, etc. I would add lots of white along with some green and small bits of yellow & orange. I also like the idea of more black, too.
If I werent currently obsessed with knitting I'd probably be working on blocks too. How fun!!

  40. Your blocks look amazing Lynne - I cant believe you've done so many! I'm still waiting for my book to arrive and have made big fat zero!!

Like many of the other comments my suggestion for future blocks would to add some other nice bold colours to balance out the blocks that have a lot of red in them.

    Very inspiring!!

  41. If I say "This is not a contest, Lynne" you might think I'm a bit jealous (?)
Well I am a bit: creating so many beautiful blocks at such a speed!
I'd rather be proud of you than jealous, don't you agree?
    Well done, Turbo Lynne!
And they really are all very nice, but is there a colour missing?
Red, white and black are there, I can see them.
A little blue, a tiny bit of green.
How about more green and orange and/or yellow?
Throw in all the colours of the rainbow and add purple too!

You're doing a great job at inspiring us all.
( Now I just want my migraine to go away so I can join in!)

  42. Love the design but do wonder about just keeping the whole thing to 2 colours (possibly one colour in 2 different shades / tones). Your loving sister x

  43. Not a very useful comment but : I love the little blue man in the bottom row. Oh, and it's my birthday, or was on the day you posted this.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am with the person who said you need more black. Your blocks are beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Great job! I don't think I would add sashing - I like how you have used the different whites to make each block stand out on it's own. I think a coloured sashing would give the eye too much to look at and detract from the unique quality of each block.

  46. Oh Heavens Lynne this is gorgeous...you have such color sense and a joie de vivre that cannot be mistaken...if ever you would like to be a guest at stash, especially during a new campaign..please let me know..I think the added exposure could well...let's just say this..open up some new doors...wink....
