Army Star

Army Star for Meghan by Lynne @ Lilys Quilts

In a new bee I elbowed my way into, Meghan asked for an army star quilt block or anything for a quilt for her husband who's in the army and is also airborne.  There is an army star quilt block but someone else is making that so I googled "army star" and found this star which used to be on the side of US planes in the second world war.  I split the star into dark/light triangles to look like planes to reflect the airborne part of his career.  I'm just curious - can you guess how I pieced this?

  1. With magic, maybe? Lynne, it's so crisp and perfect - it might be one of my very favorites from you.

  3. Did you have help from the quilting fairy? Or was it an army of elves?!! However you did it, it looks fabulous!

  4. I like this star! Seems like it would not be easily pieced. Maybe hand piecing.

  6. I think you pieced the circle in three sections then stitched them together and then inset it into the square. The one section of the middle you must have pieced in several sections and then pieced together. Does that even make any sense. Probably not. I'm not so good at writing down what my head is telling me. :-)

  17. Not a clue. Although magic and the quilting fairy sound likely contenders. It is beyond awesome!

  18. My guess . . . you strip pieced the two colors together then using the 30 degree marks on your cutting mat (like I have on mine) you cut the outside star points. The inside star points look to be 60 degree triangles. That is my guess. If not, I vote for paper piecing :0)

  30. Based on your seamlines in the middle of the white strips that separate the red and blue light and dark sections, it looks like you paper pieced the star in 5 sections that each include the right side of one star point and the left side of the star point next to it. Pretty cool!

  33. This is amazing, it's pretty close the the Air Force star too. I would love to make a huge one as a center of a quilt for a retiring military friend, any chance of getting the directions?
