Amitie BOM - 16 circles done!

Amitie BOM - 16 circles done! by Lynne @ Lilys Quilts
The sixteen circles in the Amitie BOM are now pieced.  My first circle was made exactly as instructed in the BOM instructions. In the second one I popped a few of my own fabrics in and by the time I got to about the fifth, I was mixing my fabrics with Amitie's fabrics on every block and re-designing or designing new blocks from scratch. It's not that I don't love the Amitie deisgn, it's just that I have more fun making up my own designs that following instructions. In my real life I don't have a rebellious bone in my body. In my alter ego quilting life, all that changes. Just as Beyonce has her on stage alter ego, I have my quilting alter ego, her name is Lily and she breaks all the rules. Finally, in my mid-forties my latent rebellious streak has found its voice in patchworking. My children could not be more proud.

Anyway, what I was really going to say was which of the 16 circles is your favourite and why. Like my children, I can't pick favourites myself but I'd love to know yours. I'd also like to know which you think work the best based on fabric choices and why. There's a whole mix of fabrics in here and some blocks work better than others but that doesn't seem to matter so much once the whole lot are together.

  1. Haha! I just downloaded the 9-minute version of "All the Single Ladies" in honor of finishing my Single Girl Quiltalong. So you GO, Sasha Fierce!!

Um, can't pick a favorite. I'm too distracted by the fabulous black and white polka dots!

  2. Wow Lynne, this looks awesome! I love the 2nd block in the top row. It has a kind of 3D effect. I also love the fabric choices in this block as well as in the 4th block in row #3 and the 4th block in row #4.

  3. This is hard! But the one that my eye draws to is the 2nd row far left-I like the yellow spokes-they seem to really stand out.
Leaving as anon because I can't log in!

  4. Third row; far right. Love the 'sun' in the middle, how it stands out so well and all the colours together. But I have to say it wasn't easy picking a favourite because they are all stunning.

  5. Wow Lynne - they are so gorgeous! What an amazing quilt! I love the first one - it just pops and I also like the 3rd row second one from the left - the swirl of those fabrics is amazing! You really are a master piecer - I'm in awe!!

  6. I saw the real thing in the shop this morning, and I think I like yours better. As for my favourite block its a toss up between third row down far right and first row, 2nd left. Well done you!

  7. Bottom row third from left is a smasher!

OK Rebel Lil, when are you organising the first midnight Quilting Graffiti event (a la Telegraph article!)?

  8. Big little george- all the plaid and the scraps, just works so well for my eyes

  9. The second from the top, I love how you mixed the background blues and greys.

  10. still like third row, far right! Balance of colour and design!

  11. Great work Lynne - as a whole it works really well and I've a few favourites -
row 1 #2, row 2 #1, row 3 #4 and row 4 #2 and #4 - these ones in particular stand out as the central design is easier to see in each - I think the others are maybe slightly overloaded by the background fabrics being the same tonal colour quality and therefore don't stand out as much - the fabrics are great but all 'strong' colours

  12. OK, being greedy, I want 2 favourite's. First row, second one in and bottom row, second one in. Love the colour choices and they are crisp and clear in what they are. Don't let that take away from the other blocks though as it is a fabulous quilt. Well done to your alter ego Lily. What an amazing woman she is.

  13. (From left to right, from top to bottom, all blocks have numbers)
nr. 1 Lovely block, pity I can't see all the star points: one just blends in the background.
nr 7 not always enough contrast for the points
I luv!! block 8, but not in these fabrics: it's all so very dark (as opposed to what Kati (from the blue chair) did to LynnBobSquarePants or was it KatyBobSquarePants?
nr 11 doesn't have enough contrast
nr 13 is it a square in a square in a circle in a square in a circle?
It's hard to see, because the fabric won't let me.
    favourites: nr. 3, 6, 10, 12, 14, 15 and 16
You want me to choose 1 favourite?
You can ask too much, Lynn ....

Well done for finishing this: in all it looks very busy, but great.
You've certainly made me understand the need for solids every now and again. Or at least that's my opinion ...

How many blocks have you sewn last night for the Farmer's Wife QA?
For I don't know if there's any other time you could have done them ...

  14. Lynne they are all fantastic! I cant pick just one.. I'll pick all four of the second column!

  15. My fav - although I like them all you understand! - has to be that star in the last bottom extreme right-hand side! Why? Well it's so striking as the star stands out from the background - close second is the daisy in the bottom row! But they are all winners!

  16. I like the flying geese block. And the green flower with the orange centre - that one has good contrast. They certainly all work well together, although some of the contrast in some of the blocks could have been better. I think the over-all mayhem is quite striking and will draw people in for a closer look to see the different blocks... this is fabulous and glad to hear you are being rebellious with your quilting - it is you quilt after all and you should make it the way you want... Have fun!

  17. My eyes are also drawn to 2nd row far left(Block 5) and 3rd row far right (block 12), but I think 2nd row far right (Block 8) is my favourite as it looks balanced with the square within a circle and the black dotty fabric in there too. Aqua with orange/red both contrast and this all just looks fantastic. Indianna (Blogger keeps making me "anonymous" not sure why)

  18. Can I have two? The compass-y one (top row, two in with the blue) and that adorable wee daisy (bottom row, two in with the green spots.)

So. What're you doing with them, missus?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I absolutely love this and can't wait to see it all finished - it is so stunning! I have stared at it for ages and I think my fav is top left corner - I really like the red and the contrast and the spiky star in the middle. But I don't think any of them DON'T work - thay all work equally well!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. gosh, they are all beautiful! i am amazed with the technical skill required to make them. you are my hero!

    ReplyDelete
  21. You are "cooking with gas" there girl! (This means you have "got it.") My own favorite is the rightmost block in the third row from the top. Why? That's my favorite star, and I love the big bright, wild fabrics in the diamonds.

    Keep going, you're doing GREAT!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I LOVE the flower one and the swirly one. They are all super cool, though!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wow Lynne these are amazing! They look fab altogether and individually - hard to pick out one, but being a flying geese fanatic I'd have to go with that one! I also like third row down, 2nd from left - unusual. Well done! Jxo

  24. Each block offers something but my favorites are second row and fourth row in the second column. I have to admit, I want to print the photo out and reread all the comments, you know, to tally the poll. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Love the second one in the second row...but then I LOVE flying geese in a circle...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I like that you flew off in your own direction - the quilt is so much more personal and rewarding that way. My favorite are the circle of flying geese (row 2 column 2) and the black and red diamonds (row 2 column 4). Although you used a lot of color and print, the white, gray, and even the black and white dot unify the blocks. Beautiful work!

  27. 4th block in row 3. It has the most contrast so the great fabrics really pop.

    ReplyDelete
  28. WOW these are all gorgeous...Where are the patterns from? Kim

    ReplyDelete
  29. 3rd row far right because of the contrast and colors.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I, too, like the 2nd from the top left for it's 3-D effect.

You've been really busy. Good job!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sorry.....I did the wrong "its" there.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I can't choose. Wait, number 4 in row 4.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ok, tried to go quickly to see what popped out - Rows 1 & 2, no.2 in each. Then rows 3 & 4 no. 4 in each. In these, the placement of colour value shows up the designs well. One or two others lose definition but altogether this is going to be a belter of a quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  34. They're great! (There's Tony again!) I love block four in the top row and block two in the bottom row - the latter is my absolute favourite, something to do with the fabric choice and the simplicity of the design.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think my favorite is still the one in the third row, second from the left. I love how it swirls from the center. I also like how the scale of the fabrics is just a little bit larger than the others. I could see making a bunch of those! They are all of course works of mini art. I can't wait to see what you do with them all.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Goodness, what an impression they make! I'm learning....

    ReplyDelete
  37. You really crack me up. I like them all, too hard to choose! Cute banner, too :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow! You do beautiful work.

    ReplyDelete
  39. OMG, Lynne!! Where you find such energy to make so great and amazing work? beyond being a mommy, wife, blogger....!! Don't you sleep? :)))
Well, about your question: Your blocks all look wonderful, it's to hard to decide but I chosen the last one!
Love the colors and prints you choosen, the red triangles pop up in that light pink background. But I chosen this one either because it seems at any time that it goes to leave running, it seems like a movement block, and I think that this is the idea from you "alter ego" Lily!! :)))
    Changes! Movement!
Congratulations for you courage to change!

  40. Love the new blog look Lynne. The font is very cool and is really easy to read! Let us all know how you go with your design and what you use - I'm sure loads of us could do with some help in that area.

Now on to the fab blocks, my faves are blocks 2 and 4 in the top row, 3 and 4 in the second row, 3 in the third row and 1 and 3 in the bottom row. That's narrowed it down to less than half… I think the reason I like those ones best is your fabric choices - gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  41. My favorite is second block in the second row--the flying geese one. The best as far as color, probably the last one on the third row as it has a great contrast so the center really pops without losing the coolness of the circle shape.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Gasp. You're a wonder.
#12 and #14 are my favs. Not exactly sure why - maybe constrained colour palatte? I just like 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Goofball me, I know palette is spelled with an 'e'.

    ReplyDelete
  44. these are amazing blocks. absolutely stunning. if you wrote a book and had the patterns for these blocks in it, I would buy it! I LOVE the look of these blocks!

    ReplyDelete
  45. My favorite is #7. I love the fabrics and how they pop.
