A quilt for a teenaged boy

Mmm.  I've made quilts for three of my kids but, when I tried to make one for my 13 year old son, it all went horribly wrong and ended up looking boring and blah and I abandoned it.  So we tried again.  This time, we chose a couple of quilts he thought were OK, a circles quilt and a quilt with a piano border.  He chose the colours - black, grey, red and white.  I chose the Tufted Tweets (not that I'd been looking for an excuse to make something with them...) and put them with lots of lovely Kona solids (from Simply Solids of course, the UK's premier online solids shop run by my real life friend Mandy).
Tom's quilt topAnd here the quilt top is hanging out in the garden, hovering over 15" of snow.  We are snowbound.  Completely totally and utterly snowbound.  I've never been snowbound before and I don't know whether to love the fact that we don't have to go anywhere or to just sit here being anxious in case things like oil, logs, food etc run out.  So if you never hear from me again ...

  1. It's wonderful, I hope he's pleased with it! Don't worry about being snow bound, check you have everything for at least a few more days, and then sit back and enjoy! We only have about 10 - 12" and have no plans to go anywhere for now :)

  2. Just think of the snow as a great background for your photo- what a great boy quilt, bold graphic with an 80s reference to the colours, love it. I have no snow and that is probably for the best. Nest, x

  6. Stunning! Years ago(20+) my son designed a quilt he wanted me to make. At that time I was a beginning quilter and there was lots of bias in his design. We compromised and came up with something similar to his original design. He was proud to show me, last month, that my grandson has taken posession of that quilt and has it in his room!

  8. I think the only thing you need to worry about is running out of fabric and thread :-)
The quilt looks fantastic - I agree, those older boy quilts are hard to do!

  9. Fantastic and original quilt! Your son must be thrilled. He'll have the quilt forever and always feel your love when he uses it :)

We're getting lots ofsnow here today and I'm dreading my drive home from work. Can't wait to get tucked in the house and not go anywhere!

  10. That's great - and he was involved in the choices so there'll be no complaints. Enjoy being snowed in - I was housebound for a few days and it's quite liberating - no expectations, no pressure except to keep warm and having a quilt over your knee whilst you work on it has to be a bonus to being snowed in - and it keeps you warm! x

  11. Love this quilt, it ticks all the boxes!
We are snowbound too, my dad is STILL with us after his flight got cancelled on Monday morning and every flight since. We have made 2 (dangerous) trips to the airport only to have to go back and pick him up when flights cancelled again. Last night he actually boarded and they sat on the runway for 5 hours until they cancelled again (all due to bloody snow) and we had to go and pick him up (through the bloody treacherous snow) at 2am. My dad is 87 in a few weeks time. Hoping to get him on a flight tomorrow afternoon.
The staying in sewing was fun at first but now I am going insane!!

  12. WOW!! LOVE THIS! sorry for yelling that. But WOW! Are the circles appliqued? Perfect fabric choices. I hope you're okay in the snow. Makes me think of those old movies where they open the door and its all snow, I seem to remember it's always a happy ending.

  13. Great quilt - those circles look so precise (I'm a little scared of curves). I hope the snow melts soon for you - as long as you don't send it our way!

  16. If you run out of fabric or wine it could get ugly...otherwise enjoy an excuse to stay home.

  17. I LOVE this!!!! No hope of running out of fabric, is there?? I'd know I was in trouble then!

  18. Great quilt. Hopefully the snow will start to melt soon.... We are also snowed in but have enough food, logs and fabric for a while. The milkman is getting through (don't know how) and so he'll bring eggs, bread and milk if we need more. Enjoy the opportunity to stay in and sew, and keep warm! Hugs, Lis

  20. Ooh, lovely - will probably be placing an order with Simply Solids just as soon as I can (why *are* solids so hard to get hold of?!) Can I ask that the colours of solid you have are? This is the best real-life representation I've seen of all of the different greys!
