Fabric diet for the new year

Angela over at Cut To Pieces is going on an 8-week fabric diet which we are all invited to join.  So no fabric purchases for the next 8 weeks.  Each week, you let her know how you're doing and your name goes into a prize draw if you've bought nothing.  So I'm jumping on the bandwagon but I can't see my name going into that prize draw very often.  I mean, what if I need a co-ordinating solid for a quilt I'm making and don't have it in my stash and I text my mate Mandy (owner of the fabulous online fabric shop, Simply Solids) and she brings me a small brown paper bag on the school run and money changes hands.  Is that supposed to count?  Or what if I buy an IKEA sheet for my bed but then realise it is exactly the size and colour I need for a quilt backing and I use it for that instead?  Is that supposed to count?  Or what if I've finished a quilt top and need to buy some binding or backing in order to finish it?  Is that supposed to count?  Well I asked Angela and she said it was and I said that her diet was too difficult and probably wasn't really fair on ordinary people like me who are just trying to get things finished.  So anyway, I'm going to go over there and grab the button but I'm just not making any promises, that's all.  Are you going to join me?  Click on the button and it'll take you there.

  1. I'll join in the new year as - oops I'm buying some cotton sheeting today to dye for my appliqué challenge project with Marjorie today.
    Then I plan to use only stash fabrics and scraps for projects where possible - the only fabric I'm allowed to buy is for backings and if necessary plain fabric / sheeting for combining blocks together

  2. ah I've just placed an order with Mandy, does this mean I've failed already?!
    I can't even pretend to follow any diet this year. I'll just have to excercise those extra fabrics off!

  3. I am doing a different fabric diet! I need to lose 1.5 stone so for every pound lost I get to spend x amount on fabric. 2 little cheats to this are that batting and thread doesn't count and neither does the fabric I need to buy to make 2 quilts early this year as gifts. I did it last year with WW and built up a lovely stash as well as losing 1.5 stone and so far I have kept it off. The problem was when I took a break from the diet in the middle of the year I still kept buying fabric . . . .

  4. hehe...i think angela could easily add a hundred names on the button....for example mine :)
    but i think it's a good challenge and i should enter it! {but i hope it doesn't count that some envelopes have yet to arrive from orders way back in early december...it's not my fault that they take so long from the us, isn't it???}
    happy new year,
    julia

  5. I have signed up too - I'm just going to have a little shop before tomorrow then I'm going to try and be a really good girl. I figure less time online window shopping will allow for more time making! Has to be good!

  6. I'm thinking about it but I was going to cut down on my commitments. Although this would be a good one to participate in! My fabric could use a little destashing! I have to think about it.

  7. Oooh, dificult, I did a 12 week fabric diet last year! I will aim to join in, but I can't guarantee there won't be any good basics jump into my stash if the LQS has a sale next week! Can I join in straight after that? LOL

  8. But there are sales on in January! No I don't think I can do it as if I see a bargain I won't be able to help myself!

  9. I can do 8 weeks easy. Sheesh...it's not like I'm going to crank out a bunch of finished projects in that time. I have a years worth of WIP.

  13. Happy new year, Mum. Well you're not actually my Mum, but you're like a quilting mother figure to me

  15. No way, I couldn't last 8 weeks without buying some fabric. Maybe 8 days, so, thanks but no thanks. I'll be sitting on the sidelines watching you try to stick to it!
