Have you ever made a lucky mistake?

Quilting away, line after line after line after line, concentration slips and you end up quilting where you had decided not to, sigh, grab seam ripper ... wait a minute ... oooh that looks quite good.  So, having decided NOT to quilt over the coloured sections of the books, I accidentally did and look how great it looks.  Kind of old leather bound book.
Now I know the Penguin classic "paper" backs were not in fact leather bound but I kind of like the look.  I mean, they weren't all the colours of the rainbow either but who wants a whole quilt of orange books?  Not my sister, that's who not.  She likes purple.  And the customer's always right - although in one case she is wrong - she says it was me who made up the family song about Princess Anne's wedding but I didn't, it was her.  If you want to know the words to the song, leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.  As a teaser, it is sung to the tune of "how much is that doggy in the window?" and was made up at a time when she was full of royal glee at Princess Anne's wedding to Captain Mark Phillips (which in time went the way of a number of our royal marriages so the song has fallen into disuse.) Anyway, let me know if you want to know the words so you can have a go at singing it.

  1. Well of course I would like to know the words to your song! Perhaps there's another quilt inspiration in it for me ;-)

  2. That's too funny! I think it looks great too, especially in relation to the seam ripper! =) I don't like tearing things up....so annoying. =)

  3. I love how the "mistake" looks - funny how things turn out! On an unrelated quilting matter - I vaguely recall months ago a post about your parents going to fabric shops in NYC for you?? I am off to NYC 2 weeks today and was wondering what they thought of the quilt shops - do they have a big selection?

  9. There is no such thing as a mistake... Every mistake is a design opportunity. You just proved the point. Smashing!

  16. Oh no, my secret is out.
My reputation as a hard and fast lefty is in tatters. Ok, I admit it. I made up an embarassingly awful song about Princess Anne and Captain Mark Philips (in the days before royal divorces).
And the quilt looks so amazingly brilliant.

  17. Hey, Nice mistake!!! As soon as Penguin sees this they'll be redesigning their covers to have stitches.

  18. That is indeed a very happy 'mistake', one that I also like very much. Bring on the song, my daughter loves all things monarchy and will no doubt memorize it immediately and freshen it up when Kate and Willy get hitched.
