Penguin Books quilt top nearly finished but how should I quilt it?

Just one more row of snow sashing to go all around, back in amethyst with a decorative strip running across near the top (seen in the left of the picture) and bind in charcoal, coal or mid grey.  I have no idea how to quilt this - suggestions please.
Off to my other sister's in London tomorrow - my four kids, her four kids, her new puppy - will we make it through the doors of Liberty with that lot in tow?  Probably not!

Julia, amethyst is the purple on the very right of the second from bottom row.  The colour I am likely to bind in (thin strip round the outside) is bottom right and there will be one more strip of white round the whole thing before that.  Look we've had that tree cut down in the right of the picture - it makes the dining room, aka, my sewing room, much brighter!

  1. Ah - super, you've been working hard
Quilting - I'd do dense quiltng (micro shells, pebbling, McTavishing, catherine wheels) in the sashing and just stitch in the ditch around the coloured sections - take a photo of a section close up and either print out and over mark with pen or pencil or draw up in microsoft picture - a great way of sorting out how various quilting formats would look

  2. I fear I won't be any help regarding how to quilt this. =( Sorry. I do think it's beautiful though...I love all the colors.

  3. If you don't enter this into FOQ next year and it doesn't win something I will take up croqueting.

  4. Blimey, blimey, blimey. Amethyst is perfect and the bottom right-hand charcoaly colour too. I love it, love it, love it. THANK YOU. Can't imagine how we'll get it here but that is a small detail. And it looks great minus the tree. Can't wait to take lots of photos of it with beautiful mountain scenery in the background.

  6. Gorgeous! I think for the quilting .... something geometric would be fun, maybe half inch off each seam, horizontal and vertical? What ever you do it will be stunning!

  7. It looks great. I'm rubbish at deciding on quilting so I'm no help at all.

  8. I like Ethne's suggestion of printing a section and drawing on it to see is a great one. I'd be tempted to stitch int he ditch of the books but do something in the sashing, to define the books. Possibly just linea quilting bt really close together, maybe to reflect the pages of the books :) Hope that's a help, it's looking fantastic!

  10. The quilt looks fantastic! Not sure about the quilting... double parralell lines between blocks??

  11. Looks really stunning Lynn, I would go for straight line quilting between the blocks, I think that keeping it simple will not distract from the fab blocks x

  12. Hooley Dooley!! It looks so amazing!!!
This sure is a stand out, knock out quilt. As for the quilting, Simple straight lines?

  13. Oh Lynne, I just love this quilt from concept to colour to setting! I like the idea of sewing either in the ditch, or 1/4" inside the sashings with both vertical and horizontal lines. I think the horizontal ones can go 1/4" inside the 'title' rectangles without interfering with the words? Any way you decide to quilt it, I'm sure is going to be fab.

Hey, I have a favour to ask if you're going to Liberty....private email so I don't look like a total opportunist in your comments.

  14. I would do some kind of random fill w/i the books (stippling, pebbles, McTavishing, etc as previously recommended) with each title being somewhat different from it's neighbor. On the sashing, do straight line 1/4" stitching to represent pages horizontal/vertically. The crossing sections will be 1/4" grid and provide some visual variation to set off the books.

  15. This is just great. I can picture limiting your quilting to the sashing -- straight line quarter inch from the seams, horizontally and vertically so as to outline the books. I kinda think quilting on top of the books would take away from their impact. But, what do I know?!

  16. This is amazing - a really clever idea and wonderfully made. I echo the general feeling of quilting in the sashing, leaving the books as they are. I would also go for straight lines, but if you had a really clever machine or indeed were fab at FMQ could you do letters of the alphabet in the sashing, or even quilt quotes from some of the books?

  17. Wow, this is amazingly creative. I love the rainbow layout, the colors chosen, the simple layout. So sweet, simple, and pretty! Fantastic job! Can't wait to see it finished! Your sister is going to love it!

  19. What a fab quilt top...I'm an avid reader and sewer and a quilt like the is the perfect way to combine the two.
