The Dashwood Quilt

David from Dashwood Studio emailed me the other day to ask whether I could make a quilt using every single print they'd produced in the year since they'd started in business.  I straightaway pictured some kind of paint chip chart with polaroid photo dimensions and Dashwood Studio's logo on the bottom, a bit like this.   I pictured a spectrum layout so that a whole host of different prints and colours could all blend together in one quilt.

And this is how it came out.  I didn't go for the Dashwood Studio logo in the end because my new printer decided it didn't want to print on fabric which is a shame a my old printer printed beautifully onto fabric.  I sashed and bound in Kona white for a nice clean finish.

I quilted a straight line diagonal cross hatch using an Aurifil 40wt (green spool) which is a lovely weight for quilting - just a bit heavier than the 50wt for a bit more strength and definition.  Quilting straight lines on the diagonal helps to avoid puckers as you can use the bias in the fabrics to work with you.  And as usual, I pre-marked every single quilting line with a hera marker - unless I do that, my lines don't come out as straight, even if I follow the lines on the quilt itself.

  1. I think the work you do for them is your best work. Your eye for colour and their colours just seem to make great quilting things happen. And you won't often hear me say that.

  5. Love this simple idea. (PS: Do you recommend any particular hera marker? Brand? Since pressure us needed, I don't want to buy one that 'gives out' or isn't made as well as another one.)

  6. I like the way the squares shade across. Aren't the simple designs the best? It is all about the fabric for me :)
