I MADE A SKIRT!!!

Yes!  I crossed over from the world we know (quilting) to the world we don't (dress making).  To my family, this will be no surprise as I grew up making clothes, often adapted from old clothes from the charity shop.  I stopped about 15 years ago when kids came along, time got short, clothing just seemed to get cheaper and cheaper and dressmaking fabrics just seemed to get more and more expensive.  But then all the wonderful Japanese Echino and Kokka linens have been crying out to me to be made into cute skirts.  And so armed with a yard of this fabulous Kokka linen...

And with advice from the impossibly glamorour Rachel on twitter and with help from this fabulous tutorial on her blog House of Pinheiro which teaches you how to draft your own skirt pattern, I cut, pressed, folded, measured and came up with a real life skirt.  Here it is modelled alone.

And here it is modelled with my new deep cyan 9% cashmere jumper which looks really expensive but cost £10 from the sale rail in M&Co.

So watch this space for many more Kokka and Echino linen skirts.  Quilts?  So yesterday.  And P.S., when I showed my 15 year old son, his response was "woah, we thought you were dorky before ...".

  1. Ha ha! Cheeky son! Well we all love it - it suits you very well. I am determined to get better at dressmaking too. Although when I first made a dress for my daughter the materials cost me about £10 and the same day my mum bought her a dress from Next for £8! Loved seeing Brioni's Echino skirt at FQR last year though so will have to get making something funky sharpish x

  3. Excellent kid comment! But he knows nothing. No one else will have a skirt as brilliant as this and it fits perfectly. Well done you!!! One day I might get brave enough.

  4. Very pretty. I was the opposite. I went from making all my clothes, pocketbooks, curtains and so on to making quilts.

  5. It's marvellous! I have a hankering to make a Tova but have never quite got round to buying the pattern or thinking about fabric!

  6. You look hot! Fab skirt and such a great print to choose. I don't think teenagers are meant to think you're anything but dorky, it's part of the process! Oh and I'm sticking to quilts and avoiding measuring my body right now ;)

  7. Superb, don't make too many or you'll not be able to get dressed in the morning trying to decide.
I have plans for clothes making this summer (assuming we're going to have one) but need space to work - hurry up builders!

  15. look at you skinny minnie! That's one of my favorite fabrics and you are completely dork free in it (at least in the clothing department!). I too am trying to get back into garment sewing. That was my first love and I love that you can finish it so quickly as compared to a quilt. Sometimes I just want use large amounts of fabulous fabrics too. That doesn't hurt. ;)

  16. Not remotely dorky... Skirt and you in it look fab!

  17. Love that fabric - I wouldn't have thought 'skirt' but it really works.
I too sometimes stray from the path and make an item of clothing. My husband thinks its great because it is 'useful'. However, the pattern cutting part of the process usually puts me off and I don't pick up a Burda/Butterick/Simiplicity again for another couple of years.

  18. I have been trying my hand a bit here and there at making items of "clothing." Only little girls simple dresses at this point, but with so many marvelous fabrics who doesn't want to make their own dresses/skirts.

  19. Love the skirt! Very proud of you for following through and coming out with something you can wear. Now everyone will want to know where you got it. How jealous they will be when they hear that you made it!

  26. Your son's comment had me burst out laughing......brings me back to the days mine were that age. Well how about a few days ago, when my oldest son told me sweetly that he didn't buy me a funny birthday card this year because it might hit too close to home. Gotta love those sons. The skirt looks great....not the least bit dorky, but then what does a 60 year old know about dorky.
