Doll Quilt Swap - the story so far

So my partner in the DQS likes Gees Bend and improv quilts so I decided to get together some solids and go down that route.   My starting point was this but I didn't know what to put down the middle.
Where next?

I had an idea for some kind of swirly shape down the middle but when I added that into the mix, I got quite a reaction from everyone over at Flickr as it seems I had added ladies parts to my quilt.
Sheesh

So those had to be removed and set aside and I went with squares within squares to make a kind of wonky nine patch.
parts-be-gone

And now I'm mulling over what to do next - stay all black for border and binding, add in some kind of a frame, bind in the aquq, bind in the black with an aqua faux piping. Any suggestions?

Comments

  1. small lilac border (centre of block 6) then bigger black again and scrappy multi (of the colours in the blocks) binding?

  2. Yes Marg, I do like the idea of a scrappy binding! Good thinking! I'm sorry I missed all the fun on that Flick'r thread. While you've been asleep I've been working at the Australian Tennis Open! You gals have all the fun!

  3. How about a scrappy kona radiating gees bend style piano keys border, in the colours you've already used. Each key not much longer than about 1.5". Oh, and I think I might have guessed your partner!!!

  4. I like the last one, bind in the black with an aqua faux piping

  5. I say a lovely flange using a colour from the blocks and then bound in black = striking! Jaybird quilts has a great tutorial on flanges. Funny word isn't it???

  7. The comments on Flickr were very funny and I'm still chuckling too.
I hope you don't chuck your "parts" in the bin.
I love how it's turned out and loved the process, have no idea what you should do for the border and binding, but I'm sure you will come up with something fabulous.

  8. Please go with the faux piping idea
And maybe consider one of those odd splashes of colour in the main binding that gets done sometimes (I think FilmintheFridge, does it)

  9. That whole Ladyparts thing was so funny! What abvout strip piecing some of your solids and making a stripy binding (so the stripes are going out the way, rather than parallel to the quilt), you could even make them look like little squares going all the round this way?

  13. I liked the swirly part and didn't get what could possibly be wrong with it until I read "lady parts" and then I just couldn't get the picture out of my mind. lol

  14. I'm loving Ethne's idea for the binding, black with a little coloured bit somewhere.
I love how this quilt took on a life of it's own over on Flickr, it gave me a good belly laugh! You have one lucky partner Lynne!

  15. this is begging for some lovely hand quilting in multiple shades...I hope you will put some of that in too!

  16. ooo, good idea Angela! I like black or pieced binding on it just the way it is, no border. Well, how big is it now?

  17. well, Lynne, as you know I think this is awesome and I would just black bind it with perhaps a pop of one of your colours in a flange faux piping thing (oh lord, that word 'flange' makes me snigger too)

But really I think too much busy-ness round the edge will detract from its absolute perfection as is :)

  18. Lots of ides there for you Lynne,
I like the first one with the small lilac border and then go with a wider black border with some nice quilting using thread of those shades and a scrappy binding. It looks great and what a lucky person to be receiving it.

  19. I think it'd look really nice with just a simple aqua border. :)

PS. I would never have seen that in the original design without it being pointed out....
