Hello! I'm Charlotte from Displacement Activity, and I am the lucky duck who got the chance to make something using the gorgeous Sunrise bundle from Oakshott. The vibrant colours and wonderful hand of these fabrics gets me every time, and inspired me to make this quilt that, to me, represents the changing colours of the sky and sun at dawn.
The background was pieced using width-of-fabric strips in four shades of blue, using varying strip widths to give the impression that the colours were blending together - as the sky gradually lightens after sunrise. I then used this brilliant tutorial by Sarah Fielke to make different sized circles (3", 5" and 7") with the Oakshotts. I prepared several circles from each colour in the bundle (apart from the greens), although I didn't end up using them all. I'm thinking cushions for the leftovers - you can never have too many, right?
I then arranged the circles in a diagonal line across the background, basted them in place with a tiny bit of glue, and machine stitched around the edge of each one with matching thread. Changing the thread so often was slightly tedious (to say the least!) but in the end it was totally worth it. I didn't want anything to detract from the beautiful colours of the circles.
I wanted to hand quilt around the outside of each circle in matching thread but knew that this wouldn't be enough to hold the layers together across the large areas of negative space, so the background is straight-line machine quilted at random intervals, keeping the circles clear. The hand stitching was added afterwards when everything was firmly held together.
The final result is a beautifully textured throw-sized quilt (43 x 60 inches) that makes me very happy every time I look at it. Thanks so much to Lynne and Michael for the opportunity to make something with these wonderful fabrics!
