Do you have an iPad?

Since I got my iPad for Christmas, the runaway best app I have bought has been Touchdraw which cost me a mere £6.  It is also being rolled out for macs and I will be camping outside the app store the night before that release.  For information, I have no relationship with Touchdraw, I paid good cold hard cash for the app and am not being paid or sponsored to talk about them on this blog.  Having said that, the customer service I have had from them when I have got stuck or can't make something work or  can't work out how to re-size a diagram for import into Fat Quarterly has been second to none.

Touchdraw is a vector graphics app which has incredible capabilities whilst being child's play to use.  Kerry verykerryberry explained to me that the "vector" part means that you can re-size your drawings to any size without losing quality.  I only bought this app a couple of months ago, have no computer aided design experience whatsoever and yet have have been amazed at how easy it has been for me to get it to do pretty much anything I ask it to do.  A few people have asked for tutorials so I thought I might have a go at putting something together and if you're itching to get started immediately, there are some great video tutorials on the Touchdraw website and for a quilter, I would start with Basic Shape Creation and Selection and Tracing a Shape and Using Fills.  So let me know, would you be interested in being able to draw up templates like this:

Quilt blocks like this:

Assembly diagrams like this:

Put together buttons like this:

Re-design your blog header like this:

Play around with the Fat Quarterly logo like this:

Design quilts like this:

Or this:

Or this:

Using this app, you can import photos, add text and borders, insert them into bigger pictures, use a series of photos to make a mosaic, perhaps for a blog header.  You can also import pictures, so jpegs of fabric can be imported and dropped into quilt plans.  I've only had this app for a couple of months and am still at the early stages of learning everything it can do but, if you're interested in trying it out and learning along, let me know and I will put together a series of tutorials which build up into you at least being able to put together the diagrams I've learned how to do.  I'm not saying I do everything the right way, or the quickest or easiest way and I'd love anyone else with the app to chip in with their suggestions, tips, ideas and maybe even a tutorial.

  7. I got an iPad recently and almost straight away downloaded touchdraw. I am terrible at using it (one or two successful but very basic designs, anything tricky and I suck at it). I would looove you to do a tutorial series!

  11. The only reason I haven't bought it since you began speaking of it so fondly is that I am so slow at learning. I will buy it today and try to figure out some basics while I eagerly await your first tutorial. But no pressure!

  22. I have been tempted to buy the app on a recommendation of another quilter but had been afraid it would go unused due to my technostupidity. The fact that you say you are spontaneously reviewing it and have found it to be friendly makes me dare to try it. It is really a bargain.

  23. I still play with it from time to time but I have little time right now. Hopefully more soon. I will get the app for my mac, please share when it is coming out.

  24. Goodness this sounds really interesting, but I don't have an ipad nor mac, so guess that leaves me in the cold, but will be interested in how you all get on.

  35. I would love some tutorials! Of course, I also need time to sit down with the app and play with it a bit and that seems to be scarce right now. But tutorials would definitely help streamline things!

  38. I need this but I need an iPad first, fingers crossed they bring it out for mac ASAP!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Do you know when they are making this available for Macs? It looks like a great tool

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hmmm, maybe this is the real reason I ended up bailing out my son when he inadvertently won two eBay auctions and ended up with TWO iPads and he talked me into buying the extra one. I had seen Kerry write about this app but wasn't sure I wanted to fork over the money. You just tipped the scale.
P.S. Do you realize how much money I spend because of things you write about? First pricey Oakshott cottons, and now a pricey app. I might need an intervention...
