Siblings Together Quilting Bee

Hi, I'm Maria from sewlovetosew and I'm here today on Lynne's blog to tell you about my month's quilt for the Siblings Together Quilting Bee which Lynne has kindly coordinated. The bee is making twelve quilts over a year for the charity.

Regular readers of Lily's Quilts will most likely be aware of Siblings Together, but for any new comers I thought I'd tell you a little about the charity and the call for quilts.  Here is a brief description taken from their web site:

The trauma of separation from siblings and its lifelong effects are often overlooked. We aim to help young people in care initiate and continue to have contact with their siblings, helping them to develop strong family bonds and above all achieve an independent and positive place in society supported by their sibling relationships.

Each year the charity arranges summer camps where the siblings can spend valuable time together. Last year Lynne initiated a flickr group where quilters from around the world made quilts or blocks for group quilts. These were given to the children as their own special gift to take away from the camps, a reminder of a wonderful time spent together.  For the Siblings Together Bee Moda is generously donating all the fabric for the quilt tops.  For my month I chose the line S'More Love designed by Cosmo Cricket, a fun line with a camping theme, most appropriate in the circumstances. I received this gorgeous bundle of fabrics from Moda.

The block I chose was Stepping Stairs designed by John Q Adams. I felt it was the ideal block to showcase the many directional prints in S'More Love which includes fish, owls and caravans. Perfect for a young boy.

Each bee member made a Stepping Stairs block and I put them together into this quilt.

Not only did Moda donate all the fabrics for the 12 quilt tops but Lynne managed to secure backings from a number of generous fabric shops as seen at the end of the post. Jo from the bee also arranged for a very generous donation of batting from Lady Sew and Sew The backing for the quilt, Type by Julia Rothman for Windham Fabric, was kindly donated by Sew Fresh Fabrics.

You don't have to be part of the bee to make a quilt for the charity and I'm sure they would be thrilled to receive more quilts. If you feel inspired to make one details can be found on the Siblings Together Flickr group.  A beautiful poem written by one of the quilters who donated last year can be read here . I think it expresses perfectly the value of the quilts.
