Advice on my theyoutube quilt

I was looking for a name for this block and it looked like tubes to me but also like a television and reminded me of the youtube icon on my iPad and so I am calling it theyoutube quilt, at least until youtube tell me not to.  I am calling it theyoutube and not youtube because that's what Bryn from Gavin and Stacey calls it.  You'll either get the reference or not and if you don't, don't worry, it's not important.  Anyway, here is one layout for this quilt.  By the way, I'm making this quilt using the Sizzix drunkard's path die to cut the corners.  They're DP block finishes at 4" and I'm adding in 8" finished rectangles to make a 16" finished block.

And here is my original planned layout.

And I'm wondering which you prefer.  Ignore colour placement for these purposes, I'll work that out when I have made all the blocks.  It's a dead simple and super quick block to make so let me know if you would like a little tute for it.  If you're nice, I might even make templates for you with my Touchdraw for iPad app.  Yes, I'm that fancy.

  2. the first one, definitely
and I like the name too!

  3. Going against the majority here. I vote for the one with the border.

  4. Im going to go against the tide also - Im going for the border one . And...can I come over for a lesson or 20 on touchdraw? Ive given up

  5. I like the border, and I never like borders. But you can make it 4x4 if you want

  6. I like the one without the border. I do actually like the bordered one too, but the border looks a little too close to the blocks. I think if you were to keep the border it would look even better with a little more negative space between it and the blocks. I think they both look awesome though!

  7. Yay for tute and templates ;-)
I like the one with the border better, but I would like more space between the blocks and the border!

  8. I love the border and would put a single one round the edge of a quilt, but not the individual block.

    See, I do sensible!

  9. Love them both, but prefer the one without the border. Would definitely vote for a tutorial too!

  10. Love them both but the first one is a bit more subtle, so I like it better. Tute please! Thank you.

  11. I like the bordered one. I like the way the colours seep into it, a bit like tartan or something. But then, I may be a little sleep deprived.

  12. Love both... now that was a lot of help wasn't it ? :-)

  13. Number One. Ah Bryn. If youtube don't like it, you can call it the youtubewayarmy.

  14. Ooh they are both fabulous but I think I prefer the first one just a little more. I do like the border idea but I find the border in the second one just a little too close to the cubes and therfore they don't 'pop' quite like the first one.

  15. Love them both but the one with the border wins my vote

  16. I like option #2. I also might have called this Going Round The U Bend. Bet you're glad you didn't ask for advice on that... ;o)

  17. I love the one with the border. I like matchy, and the border matching the blocks wins it totally for me :-)
I'm not sure how ready I am for curved seams, but a tute and templates would be great

  18. I love the one without the border.
We have a cat called Uncle Bryn - not sure if he's gay or not!

  19. I prefer the one with the border :)

  20. I love the border with matching colors in it!

  21. I like the border one too.

  22. I love the one with the border. I love the nine grid, I'd have a wee bit more of a gap between the nine and the border, but definitely loving the border one!

  23. So many people have commented and it seems there are two different opinions (!) so you'll end up having to decide yourself anyway, but I'll weigh in with my 2c worth- definitely the 1st one without the border, it's more crisp and modern to go with the design I think.
Oh and btw do you blog on the iPad? Or is the photo thing just too much hoo ha? Just wondering coz I,m a new blogger and think it's too much hoo ha. I want an app that lets you add pictures straight from my photos rather than uploading to something else. Lookin forward to the new blog link up day now I'm a new blog too!

  24. Both are great - yay for tute too eould love to try

  25. I prefer the first one! and I love the name!

  26. It's hard to decide - both are great. But I think I like the 1st one best

  27. I really like the bordered layout.

    ReplyDelete
  28. As they are now, I like the first one best. But, if you add more negative space between rounds and border, I would adore the second one.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I prefer the second one - I love how the inner border matches the colours of the adjacent block.

    ReplyDelete
  30. First one, for sure. Would love a tute!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I saw the same thing as Charlene S did. If you use the second one, I'd suggest adding more negative space between the blocks and the border, so it looks more balanced. But I love the first one too!

  32. I really liked the bordered one until I saw it borderless! hmmm...I can't decide...I'd do both!! That's a big "yes, please" to a tute and template! You're amazing, Lynne.

  33. I like the first one....but....I want to see it bound with a pieced binding that looks like the border on the second one.

Lovely quilt. It reminds me a bit of hard candies....I think they were called Charms....like Life Savers but solid and square with a divit in the center.

  34. I love the border; I think it adds that extra note to bring it all together. I really loved this pattern!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Love the second one - love borders!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love the borders and a tutorial would be fabulous.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The top one, all the way. Very fresh.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm all for the border in this case, it caught my eye right away...and I usually don't do borders.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like the first one, without the border. Unless you spaced the border out a little bit more. Not much maybe just another 1/2". To me it just looks too close right now.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love them both! What does #2 look like if you have the same gap between the border and the blocks as you have between each block? (Does that question make any sense?!)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Beautiful - love version 1. And a tute would be great. I just ordered the drunkard's path from a different company that will remain unnamed here. :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I really like both of them, but the first one jumps out to me as my favorite. I have the sizzix drunkard path die...your design idea is so inspiring! I never thought to do that. Thanks for posting a great idea.

  43. First, second, first, second...no definitely the one with the border. Yes. The border. Definitely.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I usually don't like borders, but yours with the rounded corners is totally cool! I prefer that one. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Laughing as I read the name of the quilt--in my head it was pronounced "they out ube quilt." No conflict with youtube there! Really fun design in version 1 or 2.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I really prefer the first one without the tube border. It is not as busy. I would love a tutorial. Also interested in new techniques. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love the one with the border...and would love a 'tute'. :-))
I'm impressed with your graphic skills.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I like the first one without the border. Very nice design, can't wait to see your fabric choice!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I would vote for the bordered one hands down if the border was a little farther from the tubes. So I guess I vote borderless.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I would love you to let us know how to make this little beauty! The first pic is best, but I would also add a boarder but move it out a bit so it's not so squashed in. Great work!

  52. Prefer without the border or maybe more space between the tubes and border - as Hadley says round the edge of the quilt!

But give us your tute for both please!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think I am getting out-voted here, but I really love the one with the border. I would also love a tutorial for this.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I like the first one. Can't wait to see the finished quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I like both. they are very different. But I think I would choose to do the top one without the border. I can see so many possiblities with that one. Yes I would love a tutorial.
