Fat Quarterly - Out Tomorrow

Issue 7 of Fat Quarterly is out tomorrow.

This issue is all about COLOUR. Over 100 pages with no adverts, just articles, quilt and project patterns, designer challenges, interviews, book reviews and giveaways. Here is one of the quilts featured in this issue, designed and made by Brioni.

I'd love to know what you think.  Do you buy Fat Quarterly?  If not, why not?  And if you do, what do you like about it and what would you want done differently?  What would you want more of and what less of?

  1. I actually just bought a one year subscription earlier today :) being a novice quilted I look everywhere for inspiration and I really like the modern expression of Fat Quarterly. I had of course seen blogposts about it but the concept never really was clear to me. And when I realized just how fantastic a price it was the was no hesitation.

  2. I love Fat Quarterly and I've bought the last four issues!

However, I never seem to have enough in my budget to subscribe to the year, which is just bloomin stoopid, as I'll be buying them all! Maybe next month!

I've been on a fabric and pretty much everything diet for a couple of months now but I'm still really looking forward to buying this issue tomorrow.

I love it. I love the excellence of the photos and the clarity of the tutorials ... and the inspiration that I get from them. I'm making the houndstooth quilt at the moment.

I like to read it on my tablet and sometimes I print it out too. I loved the solids issue - the articles were interesting too.

I also love that so many of the contributors are people whose blogs I love, so I like to think that my friends are famous and brilliant and that I'm supporting them some way.

The only thing I'd like to change? That it could be Fat Monthly, but then that wouldn't make any sense now, would it?!

sorry, seem to have written rather a lot ...

  3. An amazing quilt, one to be really proud of.

  4. I bought the first three issues one at a time, and then finally just got the year subscription! I think. I am not sure if it is running out yet, but I'll definitely renew, I love it!

  5. I have never bought a copy of Fat Quarterly but that is only becaude I am new to quilting. After reading the other comments, I think I will be looking for a copy tomorrow.

  6. I have a Holiday issue and the Pre-Cuts one, with your filmstrip quilt in it. I tend to forget I have them so need to bookmark them in a better way. Think I might build up to a subscription as there isn't a paper mag to match it really.

  7. I'll confess to not buying Fat Quarterly because money is tight but as soon as I can justify the cost I'll be subscribing! I'm going to add it to my 'would be nice for Christmas' list to give to my brother and parents...fingers crossed they take the hint. No adverts is very very appealing, I hadn't realised that!

  8. I have never bought it. I guess cost is biggest factor - cost for something to read online and the kind of not knowing what I'm getting and whether I'll be shelling out for something I look at think - oh I'll make that and and then just end up adding it to the list of 'maybe one days'.

  9. That quilt is gorgeous! I don't subscribe but might hint to family that it would be a good idea for Christmas :)

  10. I have purchased two FQs and I enjoyed both of them thoroughly. Despite having lost both issues when my un-backed-up hard drive crashed, I like that it is electronic and eco friendly. Tomorrow I will buy the next issue.

  11. I love it, same reasons Sarah Pings gave, I have the last 3 issues :-) And, and, mum & dad have got me a subscription for christmas! Yay! Just wish I could get it on paper... none of the paper mags I've seen are in the same league!

  12. I don't yet. I mean to, but just haven't got round to it, but maybe santa will be nice and deliver for me... :oD

  13. I do have a subscription and really enjoy it. There is a real diversity of projects and lots to choose from. I also like the discounts that the advertising quilt shops offer!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I have Issue 5 (wonder who persuaded me to get that one!?), and if I don't win a subscription, one might well go on my Chrimbo list xxx

PS. pricing in $ - bonkers!

  15. I've only just recently discovered them on flickr and haven't ever read one of their mags. But from what I hear round blogland they're a pretty fab mag. Another thing to add to my ever growing Christmas wish list!! Jxo

  16. Holy! That is one beautiful quilt! I'm a subscriber and you just made me "drool" for an issue for the first time! LOL. :-)

  17. oh i love that quilt. i don't subscribe but i really need to. i am asking for a subscription for christmas this year!

  18. I just renewed my TQS membership for 2012. I justify the cost of TQS because I let all of my quilt magazines expire. Most magazine articles are really just advertisements in disguise. So, "No" I do not subscribe to "Fat Quarterly", but it sounds like it might differ from most other quilt magazines. I've never read a copy of it, but sure do like the quilt that you showed from it.

  19. Oh my, that quilt is fabulous!

  20. I really like Fat Quarterly. I am a subscriber and have every issue, and I'm one of those featured in the Designer Challenge in the new issue (very excited!)
I agree with evrything that's been said, especially by Sarah Pings.
Another thing I love is the Fat Quarterly Blog and Flickr Group. There's so much inspiration there!
And I keep going back to older issues and making things - I made something from last years Holiday issue yesterday!

  21. I have been a subscriber since day one. I love that the patterns are designed by people I am familiar with through the blogs I read. It makes it seem doable and if I run into trouble, there is a whole network of people to turn to for advice on these exact projects. And I love that it's digital.

  22. I have not wanted to purchase it since I only had a desktop [on a different floor from my sewing machine]. I recently bought a laptop & just got a year subscription :)
    Thanks for the reminder!

  23. I'm a charter member there. *proud look* Signed up for a subscription before the first issue was even available.

I have made countless projects from the issues, and look back again over and over.

Congrats on being a new team member, btw.

  24. I brought one copy and I LOVED IT. Unfortunately my two year old spilt a coffee on my mac and I lost it with everything else :(

I'm looking forward to getting an ipad, cause I think it would feel more like a magazine and I kinda wish you could get a printed copy on nice paper, but when it would cost more.

I was amazed and surprised by how much was in in, and I'm definitely buying the next one just because.

  25. I haven't bought it. I have also stopped my magazine subscriptions. I like them for inspiration, but rarely follow a pattern so I guess I am unusual : )

  26. That quilt is gorgeous!
I haven't bought Fat Quarterly mainly because I am not sold on the e-zine idea. I like to have something I can flip through in bed and take in my handbag for when I few spare minutes. I can't take my laptop everywhere.

  27. I subscribe and I love it! For me as a fairly new quilter it gives me ideas to work from! I'm not a naturally creative person so having patterns to follow that I can add my own twist to is ideal!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I subscribe, I really enjoy looking through and reading the articles but I have to admit I haven't made anything from it yet. There isn't anything I don't like about it, and I have to say I enjoy the quilt patterns and photos the most. That and the designer's challenge!

  29. A very interesting quilt.

I haven't seen a copy and I don't (currently) subscribe. I'm probably weary of subscribing as I've found that there is a tendency to pretty much repeat patterns after a short period of time. Add that to the fact that I seem to be veering more towards a looser, non traditional format of patterns and quilting, I don't know if there is much that would draw me in.

That said I follow the blog and checkout the teaser pages so sometime I might buy an issue but I'm not sure about a subscription at this point.

  30. I don't buy FQ and won't buy FQ in the future but please, people at FQ do not be offended. This is purely because I can't sew, can't quilt, can barely read. But I am LQ's n°1 fan (well sister) and therefore at least now know that you exist.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ps for the people of FQ, any comments made by me are not the responsibility of LQ. Do not blame her. She's been trying to have me put away for years.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't buy it, but have been wanting to, because I find the subscription price quite high, especially for not being a printed mag.
    Looks cool, though.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I wanted to follow up to my earlier comment. I was able to log in to Fat Quarterly and retrieve and download the past issues I had purchased but lost when my hard drive crashed. Even more fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Lynne, I've not bought any FQ yet. You may just push me over the edge with it though. :-)

  35. I checked last night and saw my download was available and took a peek before going to bed. Awesome projects again this issue. Love yours too. How fun to see your in there for you too I'm sure.

I am obviously a subscriber given my comments above. Sadly, I only have one issue left in my subscription and I'm not sure I'll be able to resubscribe but I sure hope I'll be able to. Hopefully things relax a bit by then and I'll be able to, especially since you're with them now.

  36. I did not yet buy an e-zine. Maybe it is from bad experiences with regular quilting magazines. I seldom find true inspiration or a lot of projects which I like in them. But I am spoiled through flickr and blogland ;) there is so much inspiration, tutorials and so on so that I did not feel the need to buy an e-zine yet. I would buy a single pattern if I really like it (already bought bag patterns).
